Country Girl Sitting By The Highway

I listen

for chattering brookes

bird song

sighing trees

but all i hear are roaring cars.

i look

at night

for stars

deep galaxies

but all i see is city smog

and all hiding street light

i smell

for fragrant flowers

animal smells

deed leaves

but all i smell is car exhaust

I feel

beneath me

for strong, soft dirt

grassy meadows

creaking, wooden barn floors

But all i feel is unforgiving concrete

tarseal.

i feel that all is not right in our world.

that something is missing

incomplete

but how would i know?

i'm just a country girl

sitting by the highway

thinking
