For a moment, I longed for his laugh.
Sun-kissed skin, glowing in the sun. His smile wide, confident as the wind carried away our laughs for safekeeping. Rambunctious as it vibrated his frame. Boyish in its charm with the hint of up-to-no-good.
His laugh was the promise of summer.
The wind changed and the rain sliced ice-cold against my skin. Where's your head at Aleah? This isn't the time. In a thoughtless motion, my hand moved to wipe the tears I hadn't realized had fallen.
"You don't have to do this you know. We'll find another way."
My eyes moved to him as his voice cracked, betraying his emotion. He cleared his throat and squared his shoulders, big and strong, his muscles tense and alert - protective and ready for a fight.
"They're bad news for people like us Leah."
I said nothing. Knowing the unnerving truth behind his words.
On my other side, Ellie squeezed my hand. I'm with you girl, the gesture said. I squeezed back my gratitude.
I guess this was it.
My hair stood at attention - instinct telling me to turn around and run. Twice in six months was too much to visit a police station.
Twice in a lifetime was too much.
He needs you.
I took a deep breath and walked through the doors of the station, instantly missing the warmth of Ellie's hand as I let go to find the front desk. My boots echoed loudly as I tapped toward the first person I could see.
A tired-looking police officer glanced up in acknowledgment. His sandy hair and kind eyes reminded me of Dylan's.
"Hi- I, um, I'm not sure how to do this... Is this where I turn myself in?"
