Most of the time kids didn't know what faction they wanted to be in almost until it was the day of the Choosing Ceremony. They often waited for the test results until they really thought about what faction they were going into. But since age eight Clint Barton wanted to be in Dauntless. If he wasn't Dauntless then he'd rather be factionless. Seeing as he was born in Amity, it really wouldn't be surprising to others if he did become factionless. Whenever he went to the gates with his older brother, Barney, and his group of friends he tried to talk to the Dauntless guards. When he told them he wanted to be Dauntless too they'd either give a half-smile that was somewhat like a smile of pity or a short laugh.
Natalia Romanova was very differing from Clint Barton at that age. It was not said in the large building that was practically an orphanage for girls her age, but all of them were expected to stay in Erudite. It was snuck in through small little visual reminders that their IQs soared higher than the girls their age not in that building, it felt like an underground organization they way this place operated but none of the girls noticed or cared. That was something they couldn't notice. But from time to time, Natalia did. But never mind the Choosing Ceremony, there were more important things in Erudite and Natalia had to do her fair share of work as well as homework, and usual mental exercises.
At sixteen Clint was fully ready to leave Amity. He had some great lessons on how to get friends he supposed and the work with lifting wooden boxes filled with produce helped with building muscle but that was really it. By now it was widely known he wanted to get to Dauntless. Even so, the people of Amity called him the 'Little Runaway' fondly. Clint hated it.
Natalia doubted the 'orphanage' at sixteen. She knew it wasn't really an approved orphanage but everybody in Erudite chose not to acknowledge it. Natalia knew everybody was ignoring it purposely and really doubted whether she'd stay. They couldn't stop her as far as she knew. But these thoughts only came to her as she fell asleep and during the day nobody knew about her thoughts and she continued with training. Training, she had called it. What did she know, really?
