"hey!" nancy smiled, ruffling mike's hair from behind as she walked to her usual seat on the table. "how was your first day?"

"pure shit." mike sighed, chewing his food angrily as he frowned and clenched his fists underneath the table.

their parents weren't home. ted had gone off to the office earlier in the morning and karen has left to
pick holly up, leaving mike and nancy all by themselves to eat.

"why is that?" nancy frowned, rubbing mike's arm with her hand. mike was taken aback by her sweetness, normally being used to her being cold and sometimes, even mean.

"well, do you remember jane?" mike started, scratching the back of his neck. "jane hopper?"

"are you talking about el hopper?" nancy asked smiling, to which mike nodded. the brunette squealed, seemingly excited. "what does she have to do with your day being pure shit?"

"she made my day a shitty day." mike groaned. "she goes to hawkins high, in senior year just like me."

"well, that's good, isn't it? i mean, she was your best friend after all." nancy smiled. "you two were inseparable, didn't you miss her?"

"i did." mike gave her a weak smile. "i still do. i miss el."

"but you two go to the same school, why don't you guys hang out just like you used to, back in chicago?"

"that's not el." mike claimed. "no, not even close. the jane i saw today, the one that humiliated me in front of the whole school, she was far from being anything like el from chicago."

"wait, she humiliated you?" nancy's warm smile had faded into an angry frown.

"she did, yeah." mike nodded. "apparently she's the school's queen bee. dustin told me that she is cheerleader captain, super rich and desired, the most popular girl in the entire town. he said you either wanted to be her friend, or you wanted to be her. or date her, even."

"wow, are you sure we are talking about the same jane hopper that used to get mad at you whenever you said that harry potter was nothing compared to star wars?" nancy asked amazed, to which mike nodded. "the one that always carried a sketchbook with her and drew in every single surface possible little hearts and smiley faces?"

"same person, different personality." mike said. "but fuck it. she will not get to me, i won't allow it."

nancy shrugged and smiled apologetically, then went on to talk about her day at her new job and that she met a cute guy named jonathan.

the doorbell rang, kind of saving mike from having a conversation with her sister about how cute jonathan's smile was and how adorable he is. he stood up from his chair, and opened the door only to find, out of anyone else, jane hopper.

"hi, mike." something about the way she said his name sent shivers down his spine, and just then he remembered that he hadn't heard his name come out of her mouth in three years.

"how the hell does you know my address?"

"my dad told me."

"what do you want, hopper?" mike asked with annoyance, crossing his arms.

"i want to apologize." jane said, fidgeting with the borders of the sleeves of her navy blue sweater. "for what i said about your father."

"just for that? you're not gonna apologize for calling me a nerd and humiliating me in front of everyone?"

"will you just let me finish?" jane spat out, interrupting mike. he nodded, his black curls bouncing with the movement of his head. jane sighed, shaking her head. "i also want to apologize for the way i treated you, and for calling you a frog face."
