Self-worth issues. The main female character always has self-worth issues. Why? I get that most females question their worth but not all. Some come into self-acceptance.

However when this issue is brought up in AMBW stories the female lead never resolves this personal problem. Like why even bring up that she's insecure about her skin tone, lip shape or kinky hair? The author never gets into depth about why she feels this way. Or if she's not insecure about those things she's insecure about her breast size or butt size. It's fine to write characters with insecurities but it doesn't need to be the case every story.

If you are to bring up these things; develop a way that the main black woman will overcome it. If you're going to toss this subject into your story don't abandon it. I can't count how many times I've read an AMBW fic and the self-worth topic was immediately dropped. If not dropped never mentioned again, and the chapters were rushed into a kiss or sex scene. Like I asked in the previous chapter, what the fuck are you rushing for?!

Slow down, and take time to write! When you abandon an internal or external problem any character has, you're taking away from their development. You take away things that make them interesting or relatable to the readers. Lastly, I have to ask, why doesn't the lead female come to self-acceptance? Better yet why isn't she trying to seek help or counciling for the issue?

I would like to conclude that it is ok to make any character question self-worth. It's a relatable thing because all humans question their worth at one time or another. The problem is that it doesn't have to be the case for the Black female. I mean why not the Asian male? The real problem is that most writers want to use the love interest as a means of "healing" the main female character.

When that's not how "fixing" a self-worth issue works. Not in the slightest does a quick make-out session or booty call fix that. Yes, he can compliment her and give her gifts, but that shouldn't be the author's reason why she's "overcome" that problem. Let her come into self-acceptance another way. Allow her to get to the root of the problem and have her conquer it!

Ok, see you next chapter...
