I felt as if I were floating on a cloud. I have had other dates with other boys but I could feel the sharp intensity of the atmosphere in this one. Harry was different that anyone I had ever met. So I knew that our date was going to be nothing short of amazing.
“Are you excited?” Harry looked at me from the driver’s seat of his Range Rover. He was stunning in the moonlight. I reminded myself to breathe.
“Very,” I replied. I smiled at him. He grabbed my hand and held it as he drove. It felt so right being with him that way. So easy. As if we could have been taking a simple trip to the grocery store and it still would have felt as magical.
Ten minutes later we pulled into an empty parking that seemed to be surrounded by a giant field of perfectly mown grass. I took in the scenery and observed how deserted it was. It was actually a bit frightening. But when I looked over at Harry questioningly, he sensed my hesitation and gave me an encouraging smile. Somehow, all my worries melted away.
He got out of the car and stepped around to open my door for me. He offered his hand to me as he bowed.
“My lady,” he said dramatically, still bowing. I giggled.
“Well thank you, kind sir."
We began walking through the empty field and it grew darker as we walked from the parking lot. Fear was beginning to creep up on me. As if feeling my tension, Harry squeezed my hand a bit tighter.
“Where are we going?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from wavering.
“See that tree line?” He pointed to a row of trees about a half of a mile away. “We’re going just beyond there.” I relaxed. I trusted Harry. I realized that if it were any other boy taking me deep into the woods late at night, I would’ve been running in the other direction the second he parked the car. But for some reason, I trusted Harry. And I knew that it wasn’t because he was in a boy band and was wildly famous. Because if he weren’t and we had met on any other day, in any other situation, I would have been just as attracted to him as I am now.
We reached the tree line and he stopped. He turned to smile at me and bent his face towards mine and raised his eyebrows as if asking if I was ready. I nodded and smiled. He led me further past the trees and I saw a light growing brighter at the other end. As we stepped through the last bit of wild life, I looked up and gasped. My hand flew to my heart and my other squeezed Harry’s hand even tighter.
The tree line formed a perfect circle around a small field. And in the middle of the field was a giant screen that I’ve seen used for drive-in movies. Cascading down the sides of the screen were bright twinkling lights that floated down onto the grass and covered nearly the entire the field. It looked like a sea of fireflies. In front of the screen was blanket for us to sit on. I exhaled and a few tears came to my eyes but I held them back. I looked at Harry and I hadn’t noticed that he was staring at me. He had a somber expression. Embarrassed, almost.
“Do you like it?” he asked. He looked deep into my eyes as if he’d find the answer there
“I…I…love it,” I whispered. “This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” I heard him exhale as if in relief. He paused.
“Well, I wouldn’t say the most beautiful,” he said, staring at me intently. I blushed. He pulled me into the field and through a small walkway that was lined with more twinkling lights. He sat down on the blanket and motioned for me to sit with him. I exhaled again as I took in the scenery from the middle of the field. The beauty was unearthly. This exceeds ‘romantic’, I thought.
