James kept glancing at the group of girls packed near the dormitory stairs, his heart leaping every time he sees a wisp of flaming red dance between them.

"And just as I waved my wand, his face was all this purple cluster of pustules, of course serving him well for questioning my- James!!"

As he called him, all eyes which were fixed on Sirius turned to the messy haired, seventh-year boy sitting a little aloof from the crowd.

"Oh leave him, can't you see he's busy?" said Remus, as he followed James's gaze.

"Too busy to miss my masterpiece jinx on Snivellus? Oh, I get it" Sirius rolled his eyes when he saw what Remus meant. "Hey, James! Prongs! Evans?"

At the last word, James jumped and turned in his armchair. Remus shook his head and returned to reading his book.

"What? Evans what?" James gasped, as if he was the one draining his energy to tell the first years their recent successful hexing, Sirius thought.

James flushed.

"Will you leave it?" he said, annoyed, clearly. "I was just wondering if she would lend me her potions book."

He leaned back on his armchair idly, but his eyes failed to hide an expectant look that emerged at the sound of the name.

"Obviously." Sirius raised his eyebrows.

Peter along with the rest of the first years gathered to hear him were looking from Sirius to James. Remus gave a sigh.

"Oh come on, Padfoot, I've grown up. We're in our last year and do you really think I'm going to spend it mourning over some childhood crush?"

"Totally." Remus idly turned the pages of his book. "And by childhood you mean two years back."

James pressed his lips together and looked away "I used to like her but left it because she never expressed her feelings" he said.

"As if she was mad about you"

"What, you think she wasn't?", said James "I bet she'll be dying to tell me if I ask her." He added hopefully.

"Oh brilliant. Good one, James." Sirius turned to the now gaping crowd.

"You doubt it?" asked James, his voice now rising.

"You said you bet? I'll bet."

"Yeah?, five galleons, then." James shot up from his armchair.

"What in the worl- you know what, alright then."

Sirius got up from his seat and made a great show of facing and challenging his best friend, something he couldn't miss, especially in front of an audience.

"Not five. I'll bet ten galleons that you'll ask Lily Evans out and she'll say no," he said.

James shot a quick glance at the girls who were apparently oblivious to the sudden change of events on the other side.

"So be it." Said James, trying to sound confident.

"OK tomorrow, in front of everyone,"

"What is wrong with you guys?" said Remus. "You were best friends just a minute ago."

"Oh don't you worry, Moony." Sirius smiled as James made his way to his dormitory. "It's only a matter of time."
