There he was, followed by his usual crowd of 'worshipers, as Lily liked to call them. She was slightly amused by the absence of the smug look on his face as he made his way towards her. Feeling outnumbered, she looked around, but all the others seemed to either blend in the crowd or disappear into the transfiguration classroom.

An odd feeling of mingled panic and anger trickled up her spine and formed beads of perspiration around her neck. With a swirling stomach, she saw those hazel eyes locked on hers, which seemed more piercing than ever as they approached nearer, and nearer. She didn't want to, and was sure her heart would give in for how it was thumping madly. But she couldn't turn away, nor could she move forward, and she stood transfixed, till they were an inch from her face.

"So, Evans..." James started, but his voice acted like a trigger on Lily. A burning sensation erupted in her, engulfing all her senses-fury. One second and her hand cracked swiftly across his face, her fingers sending his glasses flying. A loud gasp and her senses crawled back to her, bringing the immediate realisation of her huge blunder. The corridor drowned into gravely silence as she felt others rooted on their spots, as though trying to let the truth sink in.

"EVANS!!" the shout acted like a whip over her bowed head. She jerked it back to see professor McGonagall running towards them, her face holding nothing but plain shock.

"Potter! What's this rally you have behind and what's with Eva-EVANS!!" she turned to her. "Why did you harm Potter without any provocation from his side?" she glared at Lily, her eyes almost sending sparks.

"Never expected from..." she muttered almost to herself "Have you gone deaf? Answer me, now!"

Lily didn't reply but merely stared back, her mouth slightly open.

"Potter, what did you do?"

"Professor," Lily found her voice at last." I...please" but she couldn't tell her, she couldn't blame James; something held her back." He...I "she stammered timidly.

"Do you have a justification for your vulgar act?" McGonagall's voice thundered, cleanly cutting of hers." That too right in front of me? Detention for a week."

"No no, not detention!" Lily pleaded, horror filling her.

"Fine, explain yourself! Did Potter harm you in any way?"

"err...no"

"Did he or his companions speak to you anything which may have prompted you to do as such?"

"Um...a-"

"Then explain!"

"I'll apologise!" Lily blurted out.

"Wha-? Alright then. You'll apologise publicly, in front of everyone at lunch." With one last glare at her, McGonagall sprinted off to her class, almost knocking off the surprised students now packed in the corridor. Lily, her eyes brimming with tears again, fixed them on the ground and parted her way from the crowd, fully aware of the hundred eyes chasing after her.
