One look and James decided he couldn't do it. Avoiding the other three and hiding from Slughorn's eyes, he had been staring at Lily Evans for the whole class. No, he couldn't do it. He couldn't force her to like him. Of course, he'd been raving the previous nights just to free himself from their smug looks and remarks, knowing very well they're right. Merlin, what was he THINKING? But he would rather set his broom on fire than to admit defeat in front of everyone. Now he couldn't retreat.

As the room filled with the gong of the bells indicating the end of the class, James swung his bag across his shoulders and approached the front of the class where the girls including Lily were seated.

Ignoring the other girls' surprised faces, he looked fixedly at her "I need to talk to you, now." Though his insides swirled at the sight of her bright, green eyes, he managed to put a straight face, surprisingly.

Lily looked taken aback but, unless his eyes weren't playing tricks, pleased. She followed him without a word to the dungeons corridor. James found a quiet corner, quite enough to hide from prying eyes.

"Ookay."

Here we go. "Um...Tomorrow, I want...umm you know..."

No no not now, you're the head boy and girls drool over you James, this is supposed to be easy.

"I mean, in front of everyone, I..err...I must, " Well he was stammering stupidly "... I'm going to..."

James now felt colour rise to his face.

"You're what?" she asked

He gave a long breath.

With the shread of what was left of his dignity, he blurted out. "askyot. I mean, ask you out."

"So?"

"Um...So can you, I mean you must..umm, say yes."

"What if I wouldn't?" she said, and she had to smirk, of course.

James began to feel strangely annoyed at her reaction, as if she was taking it as a joke. Why was she making things complicated?

"Well, you better," he said without looking her in the eyes, and to his own surprise, found his voice come out quite steady. "Or else, I'll..you know,I'll...", James felt things slipping. The whole thing was making his temper rise. His reputation at stake, and Lily not realising the seriousness. Pulling himself together, he blurted out, something his self wouldn't dream of, at his Evans.

"I'll put on a furunculous jinx on you and see you roaming with purple pustules, and trust me, I mean it!!"

Without waiting for her reaction, without even a glance back, he set off to his common room, despising himself for his last words
