His hooves stood between the countless bodies, empty bodied from which souls were feasting in Valhalla. The grass was colored red, the mud mixed underneath weapons and open wounds. Some were still alive, some belonged to you. You loosened the grip on your reins and your horse started walking, carefully manoeuvring between the bodies of death vikings. But it weren't only vikings, there were blue dressed soldiers from out of France kissing these grounds to. As you looked up to the sunlight you knew they were out there somewhere. Ubbe, Björn ... Lagertha. You knew that what little hope they would have would drive them out of this land. Even if they wanted to fight, it wouldn't work. Even if you wanted to fight it wouldn't work. This was a new dynasty, a new time for a new king and a new kind of life. Every villager of Kattegat would look to those streets, scared, hopeful ... maybe angry. This was the silence preparing them, they knew it already. There wouldn't be a queen celebrating her victory, it would be a king ... it would be your brother.
The people you passed weren't looking at you. To be honest, you cared less who they were looking at. Your face was hardly a face, it was covered in the blood of your enemies and it showed hardly any emotion. You were angry, angry that it got so far. You were the only one riding in front, listening to the sound of wooden wheels moving over the streets behind you. As the great hall doomed up before you, you slowly took a grip back on the reins. Your horse stopped before the stairs as the people gathered around. And immediately his voice claimed the audience all to himself. You turned your head, looking at Ivar who shouted his name and claim on the throne. In a way you wanted to challenge him, you were his twin sister after all, you were the only one able to do it without getting killed in the proces. As he shouted your eyes fell on Hvitserk, who was watching you like he assumed you would challenge him. You just looked away, towards the people who started to kneel down for their new king. The look in Ivar his face, the greed, the power ... you always knew it would consume him one day. He had a brilliant mind but it wouldn't take away his lust for more. He didn't even looked at you, he didn't even praised you for your battles. He just did what he was best in and it was probably the one thing you hated the most about him, like the whole damn world laid at his feet. You clicked your tongue and the villagers rushed aside as your horse galloped away.
As one of the better hunters you were an even better tracker. The charm of having four brothers, you grew up between the fighting and the hunting, your mother didn't care. You followed the tracks, tracks that washed away in the rain, towards something you didn't knew excited. You stopped your horse on a hill, looking towards a small set of sheds with people walking around. You recognized Torvi, not immediately because she was easily to recognize but because she dragged a woman fort with chains, Margrethe. It didn't took long, even on this distance, for some of them to recognize you. And despite you saw Björn pull out a weapon, you weren't afraid of death. Ubbe climbed onto a horse and galloped your way.
'Sister, what are you doing here?' He asked, looking around like he was afraid Ivar would follow.
'Don't look, he is to busy claiming a throne and feasting upon it. I'm alone.' You answered.
'What are you doing here Y/n?' Björn asked who now had caught up.
'Looking where you all are hiding.' You answered honestly.
'And what are you gonna do with that information?' He followed. You forced your eyes away from Ubbe and looked straight at Björn, even he was careful with his words around you.
'Nothing.' You answered, looking back to Ubbe. 'I swear.' You followed.
'What is the meaning of this, do you want to join uss?' Ubbe asked. He sounded really hopeful, actually believing you would take that kind of a step. But you just laughed, shaking your head.
'Who contains brother then?' You asked him overly friendly.
'Why are you doing this?' Ubbe asked impatient.
'You know he will come right? I'm warning you,'
'What stops me for not killing you right here?' Björn cut you off and you hated it when he did that, he knew it. Your jaws tensed while you looked over to him.
'Be careful, snake bites can be posionness.' You whispered, pulling your horse his reins to the left, away from both of them.
'That is how we all know you, like the snake you are.' Björn hissed. Yet he didn't raise his axe, he wasn't planning on killing you.
'I knew where you are headed, sure give the King my greetings.' You winked before pushing your horse back forward.
'Y/n!' Ubbe called after you. You turned in the saddle to him.
'Don't tell Ivar.'
'I won't,' You started, looking aside Ubbe and frowning your eyebrows as you saw that Heahmund was still breathing and well. 'I want him back!' You pointed to the man. Ubbe seemed restless but you didn't care. Headmund was walking over like he was still the saint those god believers would admire. 'I thought you would be dead by now.' You said calmly. He bow his head, like he was bowing to you.
'God didn't forsake me after all.' He answered on such a tone you wanted to slap it right from his face. 'It is good seeing you.' You frowned on his words.
'It's good seeing you to Bishop Heahmund.' You faked a smile.
'He belongs to us now.' Björn said. You smiled, looking down to the holy man with a soft smile.
'I will go with her, if she promises that she won't tell her brother.' Heahmund said, looking up to you.
'By the gods I swear, Ivar won't come looking.' You promised. Heahmund looked at you, almost through you before he nodded and stepped your way. Ubbe couldn't do anything, neither could Björn, it was this of Ivar ... and they all knew what Ivar would do.As you walked through the streets of Kattegat you noticed the certain tension, the blue cloakes protective around the great hall. It only took you half a second to realize who was in there.
'Rollo.' You muttered as you jumped from your horse. 'A viking who turned christian.' You followed turning around to Heahmund.
'God has many ways.' He nodded.
'If you try converting me I will kill you in ways God wouldn't agree.' You noted. He smiled, that weird saint smile and you shook your head, walking up the stairs of the great hall.
'There she is!' Ivar said with a laugh as you pushed the wooden door open. He pushed himself up on his crutch as another man turned curiously around. Ivar was smiling ... but that smile faded as soon as he saw Heahmund. 'Bishop Heahmund.' He breathed between his teeth before his blue eyes went right back to you. 'Sister, where did you find him, why is he walking so freely?'
'How I found him and how he is walking isn't your concern brother.'
'Everything about you is my concern.' He snapped. If his eyes could fight a war then they were fighting one with Heahmund right now.
'Now you are king I probably need a new person to keep an eye on me, or will you still do that?'
'It won't be him, I'm gonna kill him.'
'You are not.' And he froze on those words. You rarely talked like this, like you challenged him, commanded him. Ivar looked back at you, the corner of his lips shook a little before he smiled, grabbing you at your neck.
'Rollo,' he announced, turning himself around. 'this is my twin sister.' He introduced you. His eyes kept frozen on you and still you relaxed, forcing your eyes away to greed what used to be a viking.
'Y/n, always hiding in the shadows of your brothers, now I can finally meet you.' He greeted you, eyes almost hungrily scouting your body. He tried on getting a feel over you but just as others it was a difficult task. But Rollo his interest shifted rather easy as Heahmund came to stand aside you.
'You found Lagertha?' Ivar asked as soon as Rollo was out of hearing distant.
'I did.'
'Where are they?'
'You will find out soon enough brother, you really think Rollo choose your side simply because Hvitserk asked?' You slowly turned, looking back to the Duke. 'He will go looking.' You promised. Ivar bite his lip, shaking his head frustrated in the process.
'And why did you brought him back? You can take care of yourself, your the best shieldmaiden we have, you,' he pushed his finger against your chest. 'are my sister.' His voice had that proud within, a proud that made you smile slowly.
'He is our way back into England.' You answered. Ivar frowned his eyes, looking back to Heahmund. 'Or does the king of Kattegat wants to sit lazy on his throne from now on?' You joked. Ivar chuckled, hanging his head as he scratched his hair. 'If I'm right Björn will go to England for shelter and those lands. We gonna need him.' You pointed to Heahmund.
'What would I do without you sister?'
'I don't know, kill all your brothers maybe.' You shrugged, giving him a shoulderpet before walking away. Ivar had maybe his goal achieved, becoming king of Kattegat but you weren't even close to yours. You wanted a certain revenge and for that you needed a boat and a way into England. The way in you already had, that only left the boat.
