The cracking of his knuckles didn't intimidate me. Every one feared him. Every one kissed his ass. Every kept their head down and only spoke when spoken to.
I did none of those things.
I was taught to be only a God -fearing woman. My being that has brought me to be the fiercest, top selected, woman for a job like a reporter.
I smirk at his attempts to put fear into my body.
"I think that promotion that you've been waiting on is around the corner," Mr.Black proposed with a sly smile.
"What's the catch?" I quipped. I briefly gazed in his green eyes as I twiddled with my watch.
We were each other's equal. Nothing put fear into our bodies. No one intimidated us. We were clever. We weren't stupid.
Everything has a cost.
Even freedom, and in my case, a promotion.
Chuckling, his dark seaweed green eyes hung lowly, he looked malicious. "You're a smart woman. Cherish isn't it? I -"
"Cherri," I corrected, my tone is sharp and hard. "Cherish is an old name I like to dead because that persona is as well."
I didn't miss the curiosity that quickly danced in his eyes.
"Cherish , as you may know, the star basketball player , Don Carson, is retired. " He prolongs, " he's done a good job staying out the media but I want you to get under his skin. Interview him, make him speak about his dark past. Speculations around this company is that we're fake news. That's bad for our brand and bad for my money."
"I am not a journalist, I'm a reporter seen on the news reporting about shit that matters not reporting about people who have a shitty life. " I argue.
"Don't forget about how you gotten into this business in the first place. I recall you never seeing a lick of college, that record of yours too which has somehow came up clean after your sentencing." Mr. Black challenges with an evil intent glistening in his eyes.
"I'm not the one you want to test, darling. People like you, your kind, belongs with a cage of animals and I suggest you be careful because you need this promotion more than anything. How's that sick mother of yours?"
I was defeated but I didn't show it. My silence gave him a satisfactory smile.
"I'm glad we have a mutual understanding Cherish. " He exist my office but not without giving me a wink. "I know you'll do the right thing. "
