It was a dark night and rain pounded against the windows of Cherish and Don's tiny apartment. They didn't have much since Cherish was a freshly new grad. Don had dropped out high school a month ago, and bounced from job to job. Cherish was the only source of income so,money was tight, and they lived close to living by check to check. The money she had a little left over went to Don, leaving herself with nothing but a ten.

Don't be selfish Cherish. She thought to herself, every time her check was cashed and the bills were paid, then looking inside of her wallet.

On this night, she lied awake and was curled in the bed. She was terrified.

Their apartment complex wasn't the safest. It had so many break ins and on top of that, Don doesn't come home until late at night. This left her shaking every night.

''He'll be home soon.'' She whispers to herself then closing her eyes shut.

The jiggling of the door made her heart leap out of her chest.

There was a difference between keys to a door opening and a breaking an entry.

Cherish eyes flew open. She abruptly shot up from the bed and scurried to the bathroom. She began turning on the shower, with the sounds of the rain, you wouldn't be able to tell she was just starting it. Locking the bathroom door, she sat on the toilet. The quickest thing that came to mind was pretend she was in the shower and making it seem like no one knew their home was getting broke into.

Lord please protect me. She thought, cuffing her mouth as tears fell from her brown eyes.

The scuffling of feet, the sounds of glass breaking and the vibrations from their roughness shook Cherish to her core.

She began shaking uncontrollably and willing herself to not wail out aloud. The bathroom door began rattling and pounding as if it was being kicked by a boot; the hinges were loosening and the wood were splintering.

''Oh my god,'' she cried.

Hours later . . .

A frown adorned Don's face as he slowly approached his apartment door. The lock was smashed in, and the door was wide open. He reached for his gun that was strapped to his hip and slowly entered the apartment.

The entire place was trashed.

Glass was scattered everywhere, their decorations were thrown everywhere, their one and only tv was gone but the only thing he could think about was Cherish.

''Please be alive.'' Don mumbles.

Hearing something crash from the bathroom, Don sprung into action.

''Get away from me!'' Cherish screamed when Don came into sight.

''It's just me baby,'' He cries before dropping to his knees and crawled towards her.

''No!'' Cherish sobbed,'' don't touch me!''

Don held her limp body in between his legs. Purple bruises were stitched on her neck, her eye was swollen shut, her lip was busted, and blood ran down her arms and legs.

"You weren't here to save me . . . '' She whimpered as she went in and out of consciousness.

''Stay with me babygirl.Don't leave me Cherish. You can't leave me!'' Don whispered as his tears fell onto her face.

Her eyes finally fell shut.
