Everywhere I've been the last three weeks was all about Don Carson. He became alive after being in hiding for so long. There was nothing but good justice he served and that was absurd. He was never like this. Don shocked the media. He was always a man of surprises. I should know.
I wasn't going to play dumb. I wasn't going to pretend that I am not at least a cause, a reason, a push, for him to be seen as a good man again. I knew I was. I wasn't the type of person who denied the truth. I embraced the truth.
The unfortunate truth that my mother is dying and probably won't live to see my next birthday.
My only wish is for her to live to see her grandchildren be born. Then just maybe I'll let God take her. Although, that isn't likely.
''You have beautiful thoughts,'' an elder woman interrupted my thoughts.
I frowned.'' Excuse me?''
''You have a beautiful mind.'' She reiterates, and she grabs my hand. I pull away.
She only smiles,'' You're so fierce and truthful. You're honest to everyone but yourself. Be careful, it's a wonderful characteristic that can bring you so much pain.'' The woman drops an item and it falls into my lap. I stare at the wrapped object.
I look up to tell her,'' Wait, you left -''
She was already gone.
I stash the present in my purse.
It was time to go to work, and I wasn't planning to stay sitting at a park not being productive.
--
On the dot, I entered the building on time for work.
I dreaded my boss but I loved my job. I wasn't going to let anyone ruin my dreams anymore.
''Good evening Ms. Lyon,'' my secretary, Tanya, greeted and handed me a mocha latte.'' Mr. Black wants to see you.''
''Tell him I'll see him after I finish the article,'' I instruct before beginning to strut towards my office.
''But Ms.Lyon he says it's urgent. He told me to tell you immediately just in case you tried to avoid him!''
I sigh.'' Page him that I am on my way.''
Mr.Black was enjoying toying with me.It grinds my gears knowing that he knows he is getting through my thick skull. As well for the past weeks, my boss has ran me ragged. I almost felt like a servant, almost like a bug under his shoe.
''Yes Mr.Black?''I ask once taking a seat in his chair.
He turns towards me while stirring his mug.'' Green Tea helps flushes you out. Did you know that Cherish? Perhaps you should drink some. I hear it clears the skin.''
''What do you want now Mr.Black? For me to spit shine your shoes?'' I inquiry while rolling my eyes.
''Maybe,'' he chuckles. He takes a seat right next to me and my eyebrows shot up.
''Is this a game to you?'' I grit.
''Everything is a game to me Cherish.'' His dark eyes met mine.
''Games isn't what I only wanted you in here for Cherish,'' Mr.Black continues.'' A fellow ex associate of yours offered a genius idea in exchange for his job back.''
''What does this have to do with me?'' I quip.
He's taunting me.
''It seems that your boy has been out of our radar. No dirt, no jail time, only good services to our community. '' He expresses,'' I want you to get in his head. Make him speak about his past, nitpick at him, anything to make him lash out and be the man he truly is.''
''Why would I do that ?'' I arch a brow.
''Why wouldn't you? A bonus check would work in your favor and isn't this the same man the reason you went to prison Cherish?Aren't you angry? Aren't you vengeful?'' Mr.Black taunts, standing up from his chair and circling mine.
Mother please forgive me.
''No. I won't do it.'' I decline . Mr. Black stops circling me abruptly.
''You're making a big mistake Cherish,'' Mr.Black growls.
''No, I'm not actually. I'm doing the best thing that has ever happened to me.''
''Consider yourself jobless, out of my office now.''
