Chapter Twenty-Five: Please Don't Leave Me

I bolted straight up, looking around. My heart was thudding and my mind struggled to make sense of what happened. I hissed in pain as my shoulder ached as it moved. The rain was still pouring and the thunder was rolling around me, lighting clapping continuously. It had gotten totally dark, the street lights the only thing illuminating the roads.

I felt my heart fall to my stomach as I realized Max was sprawled out on his back beside me. The memory of everything that happened flooded my mind, bringing with it a sickening feeling as I sat on my knees next to him. I could feel my fear rise as I stared down into the stone cold face of the boy I loved, slow tears beginning to stream down my face.

"Max..." I whispered brokenly. His eyes snapped open, focusing on me. He immediately groaned in pain, arching his back slightly. His breaths were shaky and shallow, almost horrified.

"Hey beautiful," he murmured, closing his eyes again. He scrunched up his face as he gritted his teeth, obviously in pain. I let him take my hand, trying to let him use me as an outlet. He didn't squeeze my hand though, even though I obviously saw he was hurting immensely.

"I don't want to hurt you," he clarified quietly, restraining from gripping my hand too hard. I felt my heart break as he looked up at me, his brown eyes showing only concern for me. Even as he was hurt, he was only thinking about me. The rain came down around us, pushing the horrifying mood.

I tried to help him sit up, my hand on his back. He cried out, hunching over and unwillingly tightening his grip on my hand. He was taking deeper breaths, coming out as pants almost. He swallowed hard, making himself sit up straight, even though it obviously caused him a lot of pain.

"What happened?" I finally asked, forcing my voice to steady itself. He shook his head a little, beckoning me to him. I tentatively moved closer, and he attempted to hold me as we sat in a patch of grass beside the road. I could tell it was hurting him, but he still pulled me to him despite it, his arms around me.

"You don't have to hold me if it hurts you baby," I told him quietly. He gave a slight, humorless chuckle, giving me a weak squeeze.

"Stop," he said, his voice cracking. His body was trembling as he held me against him, the action obviously causing pain. "Just give me a second, beautiful."

"It's not necessarily for you, love," he said quietly after a few minutes. "I'm trying to assure myself you're alright. You have no idea how horrified I was that I wouldn't be able to protect you..." his voice cracked at the end, giving a slight sniffle. He was crying, it occurred to me, silent tears slipping down his cheeks. He took a deep, shaky breath, pressing my body closer. He was quiet for a moment, before I spoke again.

"Let's get you home," I said slowly. He hesitated, before nodding curtly. I reluctantly separated myself from him. His hand lingered on my waist, his touch leaving only when I was too far for him to reach.

"Ready?" I asked, kneeling down and taking his arm. I saw him take a deep breath, before nodding again.

"We'll talk more about it on the way," he told me, holding his breath as I offered him my arm. I nodded, slowly helping him stand. He whimpered softly, although he tried not to let it show. He collapsed into me, holding onto my body for support.

He muttered obscurities under his breath as he dealt with the pain. He was hurt badly, considering he couldn't even stand right. I slowly shifted him, trying my hardest not to hurt him. It didn't work, he still whimpered in pain, but I was trying to get him home so I could take care of him. I guided his arm around my shoulders, still letting him lean on me for support. I put my arm around his waist, the added support able to help him walk.
