Chapter Thirty: Missing You
The sun was shining warmly against my skin as I lowered myself down from my truck, closing the door after me. I pushed my bangs behind my ear, lifting my hand to shield my eyes from the glare of the bright sunlight. I was aware of Ali and Lizzy on either side of me as I spotted him, and my heart fluttered.
Max was leaning against the brick wall of the pizzeria, clad in a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt. Dustin stood next to him, both of them too focused on their conversation to realize that we'd arrived. We began walking towards the building, and as we got half way there, Max glanced up. His eyes found mine and his face broke out into this uncontrollable smile. I grinned, forcing my steps to stay normal and holding myself back from running to him.
Ali noticed this, and let out a laugh. "Just go," she told me with a smile, nudging me with her elbow. I smiled at her gratefully, looking up as Max pushed himself off the wall and began walking towards me.
As soon as I was close enough, I jumped into his arms. We both laughed as he picked me up and spun me around, holding my body close. I felt myself relax under his touch, his scent giving me soft comfort as the feeling of his body so close settled over me. The hollow feeling in my stomach was pushed away and replaced by warmth as he set me back down on the pavement. He didn't let me go though, still wrapping me in a hug.
"Hey baby," I greeted him with a small giggle, burying my face in his chest. His body shook with a laugh, and I felt him gently kiss the top of my head.
"Hey love," he told me. I pulled away slightly, just enough to where I could look at him. He grinned down at me, and I got up on tiptoe to kiss his cheek. I sighed, content as he reached for my hand.
"I've missed you like mad," he whispered, slipping his other hand under my shirt onto my back, pushing me closer. He held our intertwined fingers to his chest over his heart, the soft thumping soothing to me.
"I missed you too..." I said softly. "A lot."
He smiled, swiftly bending and pressing his lips to mine. I reacted instantly, kissing back as his body moved with mine. His touch on my back slowly trailed to my waist, his fingers against the skin on my hip. I felt a chill go through my back, my stomach flipping as he pressed me closer.
The kiss was relatively short compared to most of the ones we shared, but I wasn't complaining. He smiled down at me and chuckled, slowly releasing my body, still keeping hold of my hand. Comfortable and settled with each other again, we walked hand in hand over to where my siblings and best friend were.
"Hey Dustin," I greeted my older brother, pulling away from Max for only a few moments to hug him.
"Hey baby sis," he said, releasing me. Max's arms automatically went around my waist, holding me in front of him. Dustin looked over my shoulder at Max, a small smile on his face. "Better now, man?" he asked him, crossing his arms over his chest. I felt Max laugh, pulling me closer.
"Absolutely," he said, rubbing my stomach. Everyone laughed, obviously amused by our actions so far today. Lizzy, Ali, and Dustin all proceeded to compare stories about the day and how Max and I reacted to being without each other. This conversation carried on as we walked inside, and Max never let go of me the entire time. According to Dustin, Max had been an absolute wreck, much like I had been. You couldn't really blame us, being so used to each others company and so in love that we couldn't see straight without each other near. I couldn't help it. When someone's as important to you as Max is to me and as I am to him, we physically can't help it.
"By the way," Max leaned around and whispered in my ear as we waited to be seated. "You look pretty damn good in my shirt, beautiful," he said with a small chuckle, kissing my temple. I felt my cheeks redden as a small smile creeped its way across my face. I quietly thanked him, pressing myself closer. He let out a small laugh, nodding as he softly stretched his fingers across my abdomen. I felt him sigh in content, his body pulling away as we were led back to a corner booth. Max and I slid in first, never letting go of each other. His fingers laced through mine as we got settled, Ali on my other side. Lizzy sat beside her, and Dustin sat on the other side of Max.
