Fell, Geno, and Ink don't really have any story
Dream and Blue are sirens that were original human. thats why they don't have flesh on their tails. when a monster is drowning, a siren can choose to save them by turning the monster into a siren.
Nightmare was a siren(also was originally a monster, more on that later) that got corrupted. when he was learning how to be a siren, he was kidnapped and tested on. he was injected with a strange mixture(mainly squid ink and liquid negativity) that turned him into what he is now. with help from Dream after he escaped(and killed the people who did that to him but we ignore that), his sanity was returned to normal.
The reason Nightmare is a siren is because he tried to kill himself by jumping into the sea, because he wanted to be with his brother. but when he did, Dream saved him, reuniting the brothers once again.

Monsters

Sci is here because he wanted to have a chance to study sirens.
Error is here because he is hoping the legends are true, and his old friend Blue was just turned into a siren, instead of being dead(he is right).
Killer wants the chance to fight a siren, as the legends say they're strong.
Reaper took the job because he thought it would be fun.
Cross just needed an excuse to get away from, something personal.
Dust was sent by XGaster(the one who hired them to find the sirens) to lead the group.
XGaster is a trophy hunter who wanted use the sirens as trophy's.
