"Am.. Amare.." my mom forces out of her weak lungs.

"Yes mom" I weep out wiping the drops of sweat from her forehead with a cloth whilst holding her hand tightly with my other.

"Promise me, that you will be strong for Faro. Be there for your brother, like I would've been." She coughs out

I feel my eyes drowning in tears. "Mom, don't talk like this, you'll be fine mom!" thinking how can a 13 year old girl be able to take care of her whole family alone

"I want you to know that mommy loves you, I'll always be there for you in spirit."

3 weeks ago mom had came back home moaning about a headache she'd had all day. The next morning she was too sick to even walk, she's been getting worse everyday. The doctor from the local village clinic came to diagnosize her but he also had no idea what was eating her up. He told us to take much care of her because there was nothing he could do for her.
Everyday afterschool I make sure to bath, feed and dress her up. Mom says that her days are numbered which is the reason I cry everytime I see because all the pain she is bearing is piercing right through her eyes. It also hurts to see her like this and know that any day now I could wake up without a mom.

I live with my uncle and little brother too. My dad died as a soldier on the battle field before I was born so I don't know much about him. My mom does talk about him much, like how I have his smile.

She has always brought food to the table for my brother and i and never failed to make us happy from the small salary she earned from the farm she worked at as a kitchen girl.

My uncle is a good for nothing Jack, he feeds himself at the tavern 24/7 and only comes home to ask for money from my mom to buy more alcohol. He is always drunk, i swear I've never seen a day when he was sober or even close to it. He has never worked a day in his life. Surprisingly, he was not always like this, it started with one bottle a day then gradually amounted to more than 20.

My brother, Faro is only 8 years old leaving us 6 years apart. He is quite the genius, he took my dad's personality mom always says. I love him so dearly, he is the kindest little boy I know in this small Kenyan village, Mahaluni.
