Leaves stir in the soft cold breeze
As it whispers the sound of distant songs.
The spindly birch trees slightly sway
Like drunk girls out for fun under the night sky.
Shadows leap and dance, growing and melting
Kindred to lil kiddies out to play.
Far into the forest, where song does not reach
A clearing, alike to a town square peacefully awaits.
The moon rises above, beckoning towards the clearing
Shining, glimmering, leading the way.
Like moths to a flame, the forest follows
Breathing life into the silence.
The owl hoots, the wolves provide the vocals
The mice and rabbits come out from wary holes.
Forgetting animal ways, they gather at the clearing
Crickets at last with strings
Bringing together the forest orchestra
Under the spotlight of the moon.
The trees sway with melody
Onlookers skip and dance
While the shadows skirt the edges,
Trying to get a glimpse of the festivities.
As the night ebbs away and dawn returns
The tired musicians retire from the clearing
Not returning to their song until the next year
