Chapter 1
Scarlet Brooklyn Grace
I was late. Again. And to be honest, I couldn't care less. I mean, who would notice I'd missed Physics, and who needs it anyway? The world is a nicer place as a mystery. I mean, and I quote, 'Is it possible that the Earth turns, the stars dance, and the comets sing, not because of gravity and Einstein's laws, but because of the power of love?' I should get a t-shirt with that printed on it.
“You're late!” Mr. Clark said upon my arrival.
“Dang! Only late? I'd hoped I'd missed the lesson.”
Mr. Clark's eyes narrowed and I wondered whether I'd gone too far. But then he sighed and said, “I know your ADHD makes thing difficult, but at least try.”
I hated it when people got all sympathetic on me. I'd rather they just shouted at me and treated me like a normal person. I gave a few of people a lazy death-glare as I plonked down into the only available seat.
Mr. Clark started talking about something to do with magnetic-fields and I started jiggering my leg. It was a nervous tick I had.
The lesson passed excruciatingly slowly, and when the bell finally rang – one of the most beautiful sounds on this planet – I jumped up with my things and escaped the confinement of the classroom. Maybe I'm also claustrophobic.
“Where are you going so quickly?” Chloe asked, tripping me up as I ran down the hallway.
“Somewhere that isn't here,” I replied. I really wasn't in the mood for her tediousness.
Chloe cocked her fake curly blond head at me and said, “Somewhere else then? Toilettes?”
“No, I meant… never mind. Don't you have something better to do? You know, other than bore people?” I asked.
“You're right, you're not worth my attention. Girls, what do you say we tell people that Scarlet is a lesbian. I'm sure she'll get all sorts of attention. Especially from other girls.”
I rolled my eyes at her and said, “Or you just don't waste your energy on spreading fake rumours and go back to fucking some random guy.”
Chloe gave me her best death-glare, but with her make-up, general Barbie-doll vibe, and big blue eyes, it didn't quite work.
I returned the glare and she flinched. Ha! Working on those in front of the mirror had payed off. I'd won, and we both knew it!
“See ya!” I yelled as I took off again.
When I got outside I was so happy to be free. But thanks to Chloe, I only had five minutes left to the break, so I settled for a quick run. I dumped my bag at a tree. And I ran for five glorious minutes.
When I ran, I got to leave my worries behind. I was faster than they were. And when I ran, the wind blowing my bangs aside, I didn't even fear stopping, when my worries would finally catch up with me. Running was like a drug. Any sport was. And when I didn't get my decent dosage of it, I got antsy and snappy. I'm sarcastic anyway.
When I was done, I got my things and checked the time.
“Shit!” I cursed. I was going to be late. Again.
I spent the whole lesson jiggering my leg and looking out the window. I had detention for being late to two lessons in a row, a personal record. Normally I'm punctual between my tardiness.
My nervous energy threw my pencil on the floor and I cursed, possibly a bit too loudly and the teacher glared at me.
“Sorry,” I said quickly.
