Iced fangs shook the silvery leaves in the forest a cold leaf-bare breeze blew across the frozen lake as it's slippery surface sparkled from the milky rays of the moon. Within the nursery walls, Dappledkit listened to the wind that buffeted the reeds as
they jangled their stiff, stubble ends together. Yet there was another sound like a faint murmuring that Dappledkit could make out. She scrambled to her small paws, careful to step over her slumbering litter mates. As she pushed through a gap in the nursery walls, she strained her ears to listen. She could hear it clearly now and her paws directed themselves to the noise her pelt getting snagged by tangling snow-covered brambles. Then the noise stopped altogether Dappledkit stepped forward as a strong, tangy smell gripped her nostrils she went over to investigate and as she skidded to a halt, but her paws slipped on the slick snow. She let out a yowl of protect before falling down a slight drop. Her pads stung with coldness and as dawn sliced through the ice-plated trees lighting she wondered how would she get back now? With the thick compacted snow and a hurt pad stumbling back to the nursery would be a lot harder, along with the fact that Dappledkit had no idea which way led back to the safe nursery- her mother would be worried and so would the whole Clan.
Stepping to her paws she tested her leg, she set it down lightly careful of the snow before moving a pace forward. Then she heard approaching pawsteps crunching on the slush Dappledkit waited quivering from the cold or punishment that would awaited her. Two piercing forest-green eyes stared down at her luminous in the half-light. 'What are you doing so far from the nursery?' The tom growled.
'I-I h-heard a s-sound.' The tortoiseshell kit stammered.
'Beetlewhisker! Beetlewhisker!' Dappledkit sagged even lower at her mother's voice.
'She's here.' The ShadowClan deputy called to the panicking queen.
'Oh my kit, my kit.' Brightfrost caressed her daughter with licks.
'You must never do that again, Dappledkit the whole Clan are looking for you.'
'I'm sorry.' She murmured.
Beetlewhisker stepped forward: 'Right, let's get her back.'
Brightfrost nodded as she picked up Dappledkit by her scruff.'She's back!' Lilackit shouted as Brightfrost approached the nursery and set her daughter down in a warm best of moss. Beetlewhisker stalked into the nursery with a she-cat on his paws a wad of bitter-smelling herbs clenched between her jaws. 'This is the kit.' Beetlewhisker gestured to Dappledkit.
The she-cat nodded as she smelt the young cat all over.'Do you hurt anywhere?' She asked softly.
'No just my pads.' Dappledkit replied.
'Will she be ok, Minfoot?' Brightfrost fretted.
Minfoot examined the kit's paw carefully. 'Beetlewhisker can you get some fresh-kill?' The medicine cat turned to the Clan deputy.
He nodded and disappeared through the wall parting. 'I'm going to give her poppy seeds for any pain. Just keep licking her pads and keep her in the nursery.' Mintfoot said to Brightfrost.
'Ok.'
As Beetlewhisker returned he dropped a sweet-smelling squirrel by the nest. With a gruff goodbye to the she-cats, he slipped through the walls.
'Eat this.' Brightfrost nosed the prey to her daughter. 'Right I've got to do some herb-sorting if she gets worse tell me.' The medicine cat told Brightfrost who nodded.
