Smoke curled from Colby's lips, dissipating quickly in the rare Forks sunshine as she waited in her car outside Bella's house. She had offered to take Bella to school after the Swan girl came over to check on her following the car accident. Colby wasn't supposed to be going to school today—Dr. Cullen had been quite clear about that—but he knew how stubborn she could be. Besides, it was the first sunny day she had seen in Forks, and she wasn't about to miss it by staying cooped up at home, especially with her mother still fuming that a Cullen was her doctor.

The sound of the passenger door opening snapped Colby out of her thoughts. She smiled as Bella slid into the seat beside her. "How're you feeling?" Bella asked, placing her book bag in the backseat next to Colby's.

"I'm fine, just a little headache," Colby replied, pointing to the cut on her forehead that was healing surprisingly fast.

"You're not supposed to be going to school today, are you?" Bella asked with a smirk as Colby pulled away from the Swan house.

"Nope, but did you really think I was going to miss a day like this?" Colby shot back, glancing at Bella, who laughed.

"Understandable," Bella said with a nod. A comfortable silence settled between the two brunettes as Colby drove towards the school.

Soon, Colby parked in her usual spot beside where Rosalie's car would normally be. The only difference was that neither Rosalie nor the other Cullens were parked in their usual spots.

"Maybe they're just running late," Colby suggested, noticing the confused look on Bella's face. It wasn't true; Colby knew exactly why the Cullens weren't at school. She had learned the truth from Emmett and Rosalie when she visited their home—the day they confessed to being vampires. Vampires that sparkled in the sun, something that would undoubtedly raise questions.

Bella and Colby got out of the car and began walking towards the school, only to be stopped by Tyler and Eric. "You two are like danger magnets, but it's good to see you alive, Colbs," Tyler said with a smile.

"Yeah, thanks, Tyler," Colby replied.

"It was nice talking to you guys, but we really gotta go," Bella said, linking her arm with Colby and steering them around the boys.

Colby watched with a hint of amusement as Bella scanned the school grounds, clearly searching for the Cullens, particularly Edward. "They're not here," Jessica announced from atop the table. Colby's arm rested on Jessica's legs as she tried to stave off sleep. The sun, unusually warm for Forks, created a cozy blanket over her as she sat with her back to it, her spaghetti strap blouse allowing the rays to kiss her tanned skin.
