Ever since you could remember, you really loved animals. You can't seem to find one that you didn't like at all. Because of this, you enjoyed taking strolls in the woods to find birds, deer, frogs, and more. It was peaceful, and you liked having time to yourself.

Except for this time. You weren't alone in the woods. There was a guy (?) wearing a green sweater with a yellow stripe crouching on the floor, doing something you couldn't see. He had a box with him, so he was probably burying a dead pet or something.

Curiously, you walked over to him. "Hey there! What are you doing?"

He glanced at you, and continued doing his thing. That was rude, so you decide to look for yourself. You noticed he was holding a bird (a robin, you noticed,) and it looked like it was distressed. Your words reached your mouth before you could think.

"Hey! What are you doing to that bird!" You turned and crouched to face him. "Do you think it's funny to just pick up wild robins just so they could be your pet? Birds would die without proper care and proper homes, so do you think it's okay to place them in a box like that? You're-"

"Shh." He finally spoke, covering your mouth with his free hand. You quickly push it away.

"H-hey! Don't-" He raised the robin to your eye level. You could clearly see that one of its wings had been broken, and that it needed serious help. It didn't look like he caused this. You finally shut up.

Oh god, you really regret shouting at him now. What are you supposed to do now? You watch as he puts the injured robin into a box (with holes for breathing, you regret not seeing those earlier) and closes it. He carries the box and stares at you intensely.

You stare back awkwardly. "I, um, uh," you swallow your words. "Please find serious help for the bird, and don't forget to wash your hands to avoid infections. Bye!"

You turned around and began to sprint out of the woods. What you didn't see is the guy staring at your direction with an amused look on his face.

Your day was one that was full of regret.

You wake up in the morning, realizing that you never said sorry to him.

Dammit. Now this regret's gonna swallow me alive the whole day. You thought to yourself.

Miraculously, you survive the school day without being called on or seeing the guy who took care of the bird. Maybe he didn't go to your school? That was quite a relief. Before you knew it, the last bell rang and school was over.

You exit the school with your head down, planning to go to the woods again and hopefully apologizing to the person you met yesterday.

In the distance, you saw a green sweater with a yellow stripe across it. The person wearing it had messy, dark hair and tan skin. You immediately recognized that person.

"Hey! Hey!" You ran after him, panting as you mentally prepared yourself to apologize. You took a deep breath.

"Hey there I just wanna say sorry for what happened yesterday, and, uh, I know you were just trying to take care of the bird and, I'm sorry for yelling? And for judging what you're doing right away? I just kinda got used to the fact that people are doing mean things to animals and I kinda just-"

"You're rambling." He cuts you off.

"Right. Sorry."

"'s okay."

"What, for shouting at you or for rambling?" You ask nervously.

"Both?" He seems genuinely confused.

"I still feel guilty though. Maybe I can treat you or something." You pause, waiting for an answer.

He thinks for a moment. "Hot choco sounds nice."

"A-alright then. I'm paying. Sorry." You both walk to the diner. Hoping he wasn't looking, you check your pockets for some extra cash. You had enough for two hot chocolates. Good. You continue to walk in complete silence.

You both silently arrive at the diner and take a seat near the window.

"... What can I get ya?" The waiter asked. You were surprised that it was Catti, the girl who's with Jockington all the time.

"Two hot chocos, please."

"... Alright." She said, and left. Now it was just you, this guy, and the awkwardness that could be felt from a mile away.

"You know, I never learned your name." You decided to say. "I'm (y/n), by the way."

"Kris." He says.

"Cool. Do you... go to the woods often?"

"Yeah. It's pretty calm there." He replies, looking through the window. "Except for yesterday. A girl yelled at me for taking care of a bird. She ran away afterwards though, when she realized."

"Hey! I already said sorry!" You exclaimed. Kris chuckled.

"I already forgave you."

Catti placed the hot chocolates on the table. You pay for the drinks and Kris takes a sip.

"So, we're cool?" You ask after paying.

"Yep. Thanks for the hot choco."

You take a sip of the hot choco, and it was as refreshing as you expected. You take a few more sips.

Placing your cup on the table, you glance at Kris. Now that anger and regret isn't clouding your thoughts, you had to admit that Kris looked pretty cute actually.

Wait, what?

"(y/n)?" The brown-haired boy asks. You realize that you've been staring at him for a while now.

"Yep, that's me." You nonchalantly say, and redirect your line of sight to the window. You saw a bird fly past the glass.

"That's a robin, right?" Kris asks, also staring at the window.

"Yep. How'd you know?"

"You mentioned it yesterday. You really like animals, huh?"

"Yep! Can I talk about them?"

"Sure."

You and Kris spend about an hour or so in the diner, talking about different types of animals. Your conversation eventually moved to other random topics. It was nice.

The sky was turning dark when you eventually left the diner.

"Hey Kris?" You ask. Kris looks at you.

"I kinda had fun today."

"Me too." He says.

"Let's go to the woods tomorrow, alright? After school? I'm gonna show you the different animals." You smile at him.

He smiles back. "Alright. See you."

[a/n]: this oneshot was very bird-specific, huh. I'm going somewhere for at least two days, and there might not be any signal there. Hopefully there is, and I could update this book. Thanks for reading!
