Chapter 1

It's the 17th of April, and still, the snow hasn't melted away. I think that Mother Nature needs to wake up and smell the coffee because I really can't take being in the cold for so long.

Today is a special day, though. It's Jacob's birthday. He's been my best friend since that day in prep, when I beat up some boy bullying him because he was taller than other kids, we have never been closer. That was in prep though. Now we're in our fifth year of high school and things change. Jacob is still tall but his height doesn't make him stand out like a giraffe. Actually I think he looks good tall. Our lives are filled with homework, tests, grades, friendship, and well... love. I've shamefully had a crush on my best friend for a year and it's only grown stronger.

Jacob isn't the type of person who likes big parties, crowds, or too much excitement, so as usual; it's just me going to celebrate his birthday.

I have to walk to Jacob's house today. All the buses are cancelled from the snow blocking the roads.

I ring the door bell. It makes this sound like wedding bells. Jacobs's mother, Mrs. Griffin, answers the door with a little too much enthusiasm, I swear she nearly rips the door right off its hinges.

"Here you are dear, you've finally arrived! Jacob's been waiting. I think he is outside in the backyard." She is a warm lady, but I sense she has a scary side. Like a mamma bear.

"Thank you Mrs. Griffin" I reply with a smile. I take off my coat; it must be like 30 degrees in their house.

"Oh my! You look gorgeous dear! Where did you get that dress?" Mrs Griffin asks.

"Oh, my Mum picked it out for me." I reply.

Mum brought me with her to get a gown for her date with dad the other day, and we found this red dress that goes down to my knees with a white belt right above my stomach. It's beautiful.

"Did you get it just for Jacob's celebration?" She asks.

"Yes I did." I say, before I realise what she had meant. She smiles.

"N-not th-that way! I m-meant it s-seemed nice to wear!" I splutter. I raise my hand to my face, to my surprise, it's hot. Why am I so embarrassed? Before Mrs. Griffins can embarrasses me even further, I rush to the back yard to look for Jacob. I open the door with ease.

He's wearing skinny jeans and a woollen jumper, not the dorky one with suspenders, just the cute one you wear over a white shirt. His hair is coloured a milk chocolate brown and is spiked up. I could see snowflakes in his hair and one lands on his nose, making him sneeze. I laugh; He was finishing off a snowman by shoving a carrot a little far into the poor snowman's face. He kind of resembles a little kid playing in the snow.

"Jacob!" I say. He looks up with a big grin. Suddenly, his smile melts into an open mouthed expression.

"What?" I say feeling self conscious.

"N-nothing! You look ... pretty L." He murmurs, directing his gaze onto his snow boulder.

I smile. "Thanks." I reply.

"L-let's go inside" Jacob stands up so fast I think that he's going to fall back down. I'm right. He slips on the ice and falls flat on his butt. I roll my eyes and reach out for his hand hand.

"Thanks." He smiles.

"No problem." I turn to head back, but Jacob slips again. I reach out to catch him but I'm too late and we both fall into the snow.

"Ow, my butt." Jacob murmurs. I laugh yet when I realise how close we are I hiccup to a stop. Our eyes lock for a second.

Mrs. Griffin swings the door open then yells, "C'mon kids stop horsing around! Get-" Mrs. Griffin stops.

"HONEY! GET THE CAMERA!" Mrs. Griffin calls out to her husband.

"MOM!" Jacob yells. His face is as red as my dress. I smile. Quickly, a memorly slaps me and I remembered the exact time he was born. 12:05... That would be any second, I glance at my phone, it reads 12:04 A few seconds and he turns 17.

3...2...

"Happy birthday!" I say. He looks at me in surprise, then he smiles, and we hear a camera flash.

"Oh! This is going on the counter!" Mrs. Griffins exclaims.

"Nice job son. I always knew this would happen." Mr. Griffins winks at Jacob. This time it's my face that goes red. I look over to Jacob and I see he's loss for words; he appears to be looking for a place to hide. I must admit it's kind of cute to see him this flustered.

His parents leave to go back inside, while we lie down in the snow with our faces so hot, that the snow seems to melt from the heat.
