Chapter 8. Bree Tanner

WHEN SHE OPENED HER EYES, EVERYTHING WAS DIFFERENT and that was only the beginning.

Bree's world expanded from living on the streets, homeless for three weeks to sunlight and stakes. She went from eating from trashcan to trashcan to feeding directly from the vein. How it correlated she didn't know.

The days merged into one another and she figured out how to stay out of trouble. Hid out near the one person how everyone steers clear of. Freaky Fred.

She quickly had to learn how to survive in a world full of violence. With Raoul and his gang of losers toasting and tearing apart the other kids for fun and the cruelty of Kristie and her minions, she didn't know how long she was going to make it.

Still, she thrived off the feeling of invincibility, she could take on the whole world.

She was the predator instead of the prey that she'd been her whole life. No longer was she afraid like she used to be. She was liberated for the earthly chains that were her humanity.

Though Raoul and Kristie were leaders in their own right, through violence, they were still afraid of Riley.

But one day in walked someone who there was more afraid of.

A familiar scent but fading drenched the building in which they lived. This person been here a lot, but not for in the past week that Bree was here. So when the scent of lemongrass and rain wafted in, along with the light human paced steps along with the tile, everyone shifted.

Gone were the animals she lived with, everyone seemed stilled into statues and presiding to be doing productive things.

The double doors swung open and thud the wall, and in walked in the most beautiful person that ever existed. She had to be, Bree didn't understand how someone could be more beautiful.

Step after step. That was all she did, but it didn't look like it. She looked to be floating across the threshold in one fluid movement.

Standing at 5'7" she wasn't the largest attention-grabbing person in the room, and yet she was the centre of attention. Donned head to toe in grey clothing that didn't go together, but somehow went with her. The dim overhead light did absolutely nothing to illuminate her golden tresses, though her skin was stardust.

Scanning the room with her eyes that matched everyone else's, once she spotted her target she approached.

A collective breath was released but everyone in the room, realising that she wasn't interested in the two kids in the corner of the room, frozen in mid-flight.

Only when she yanked the copy of War and Peace of his hands, did Riley finally look up to meet her eyes.

"Back from avoiding all your responsibilities?" He queried, indicating that she was supposed to be here all along.

"I never did want kids," she stated like this was a conversation about parenthood.

"Where were you?" His tone was casual but his glare was anything but.

She dodged the question lie it didn't matter, "I see you didn't tattle to your little girlfriend."

Someone in the room in took a breath, they were talking about her, the one who turned them all.
