Chapter 11. The Perils of Sunlight

SUNLIGHT, A SOURCE OF LIFE FOR MANY IF NOT ALL CREATURES.

Photosynthesis, something everyone learns at school. Without sunlight the human race wouldn't exist, the earth would be barren of all known life. The newborns wouldn't have even existed without it. But now it seemed to be the death of the dead, or so the newborns thought.

That night started simply.

Riley hadn't arrived yet and the newborns kept looking towards Delphi with questioning eyes and hunger but she didn't seem interested in choosing the next hunting party. But they knew well enough to not go against the rules and go out themselves. So they lay in wait.

Riley waltzing into the basement was what Delphi was waiting for and that that was the only indication Bree needed to follow.

They entered just in time to hear Riley's voice rang travelling thought the building, but it was only after clearing his throat. Everyone stood at attention waiting for whatever was to come.

Riley rand his hand thought his hair and said commandingly, "Chris, Kevin, Bree and Diego." But his eyes searched Delphi's for and objection in his choice, he found no such push.

The four left and everything settled down once again. Those how hadn't been chosen today, would tomorrow or the next day.

Delphi continued to sketch and she was lost in her visions once again, but this time it was the past instead of the future.

Time ticked on, minutes turned into hours and only two returned.

And then the chaos started.

One hour. That was the time left until sunrise when the house was burned down.

Ashes and burned wood was all that was left. Before it was a two-storey with trees all around. Bricks, oak and green paint. Simple and pretty. But Delphi could design better.

Delphi was caught unaware for once and Riley was not pleased. She hadn't seen it coming.

So close to sunrise, Raoul's gang did what they did best and destroyed a perfectly good house and newborn.

But she was quick of her feet. She saw a house on the other side of the river and everyone followed.

Everything was a blur. Not in the sense that she didn't remember but in the sense that she didn't care enough to.

Once everyone was settled into the house with only twenty minutes on the clock, Riley began to panic.

"What, do you think he's left you?" mentioning his friendship with Diego.

His eyebrows rose in question.

They already lost a newborn tonight, and he wasn't willing to lose two more. But watching him with Diego, Delphi knew that it was the only human thing he let show, friendship. Perhaps his friendship with Diego would soften him up to the idea of being with her.

"I don't know, will they? The house is gone, but they could've followed out scent here."

"Don't mess is me Frobisher?"

"Oh, I'm Frobisher now? What happened to Delphi or Del?"

Del. He was the only person to call her that. She hated it when her parents called her that when she was little, but the only person she allowed to call her that was Vanie and it stuck. It was all she ever called her, right up until their last day.
