She sat on her bed, putting her hair up into a messy ponytail. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her hair looked nice but the rest of her was dirty and greasy. Black ash marks on her cheeks. The door to her room squeaked open and she turned her head to see her mother standing in the doorway.
"Silver?" She stood there looking concerned.
"Yes, Mother?" She sighed for she knew what was coming. Her mother never liked how her family looked when they came home from working in the armory all day. Silvers mother had never been able to work because she was always given the gift of yet another child. This would make the fourth child she's had so far. She sighs and looks me up and down.
"Why haven't you washed up or put on that dress I had made for you? You need to look respectable and have pride in what you look like. Who knows, you might even meet a boy," She crossed her arms and straightened her posture. Silver rolled her eyes and goes to wash up. Once she's clean enough for her mother's taste, she puts on the dress her mother had made for her. Its a with a white collar. Silver slips it on and heads to the living room where her mother, father and two little brothers are waiting for her so they can head down to the square.
"Silver, you look nice." Her father says. She gives a curt nod and thanks him. The family left their house and headed down to the square. When they arrive Silver and her brother Gold get in one of the check-in line's while their parent's and brother Bronze let the Peacekeepers escort them to the back. Once checked in she walks over to the 12-year-old male section with her brother before heading over to the 16-year-old female's. Silver impatiently waited for the ceremony, making fun of the girl next to her in her head who was shaking with nerves. 'Wimp'. After what seemed like eon's to Silver, a woman with a dark complexion and pink and silver hair tapped on the microphone.
"Hello, District 2! I am very honored you've allowed me to speak here today for the !st ever Hunger Games!" Silver scoffs, 'Allowed? No one wants you here you piece of shiny pink shit' she thought to herself. Silver didn't bother listening to the rest of Pinky's speech, nor did she bother watching the video, she knew why she was there. She was there to listen to the names of 2 children get called to their deaths and go home with her family. It was then that the thought struck her. Why should she go home...if she didn't have to? The Victor of the games was promised a mansion in Victor's Village, peace and lot's and lot's of money.
"Now! Time to choose our tributes! Let's do our young lady first!" Pinky says to the sea of people. She carefully makes her way over to the bowl perched on a pedestal to her left. She shoves her hand into the bowl and yanks it out a second later clutching a piece of paper. Once she's back in front of the mic she clears her throat "Concretta Salve!" she exclaims. A girl in a yellow dress standing in front of Silver slowly starts to make her way to the aisle. This was the moment Silver had been waiting for.
"I volunteer as tribute!" She shouts before pushing the other girls out of her way to get to the path. The girl called Concretta gave Silver the most thankful expression she had ever seen before resuming her place among her peers. Silver walked briskly up the stairs and onto the stage. She moved until she was standing next to the pink haired woman.
" And what might your name be," she asks Silver
"Silver Smith," she replied to the woman.
"Well then, let's give it up for the first volunteer ever! Silver Smith!" the audience broke out into cheers and applause. Silver could see her parents and brother in the back of the crowd. Her mother was smiling and cheering with pride, believing her daughter had finally amounted to something. Her father and brother, on the other hand, looked terrified, unlike Silvers mother they only saw her gruesome end. When the cheering finally died down, Pinky continued on to the boys. She leaned her mouth to the mic and announce that the male tribute was someone named Flint Maros. Everything else went in a blur for Silver after shaking Flint's hand. She briefly remembered saying goodbye to her parent's and brothers. After they left, Concretta and her family came in. All of them blessing her heart and soul. Concretta's grandmother, a woman named Pepper handed Silver a coin that she stated would bring her good luck. Wanting them to simply leave, Silver thanked the old woman and took the coin. She was then escorted onto the train that would take them to the capitol. To Flint's death. And to Silver's freedom. At least that's what she believed.
