John's POV

I sat in the quiet coffee shop I'd been coming to every day, looking around at the people there. Most of them I recognized perfectly, since a lot of the same people tended to come to this place. One person in particular however, I hadn't seen there before.

A man, with his straight dark hair pulled back in a bun, with dark eyes to match his hair. He had tan skin and the most intense under-eye bags I'd ever seen, so intense that they almost made him look dead. He wore a black hoodie over a gray shirt that I could tell had words on it but couldn't read because of the baby in one of those baby carrier thingies strapped to his chest.

The man seemed to notice me looking at him because he glanced up from his laptop and stared right back at me. I accidentally locked eyes with him as I realized I looked really strange just looking at him like that from across the room, my face going red.

I was quickly pulled from my thoughts by someone tugging on my shirt, I looked at the tiny figure next to me. "Daddy, can we go to the park next, it's boring in here," she huffed with her arms crossed.

"Alright, Sunshine. C'mon," I said, picking my daughter up. Frances smiled and held onto me as I carried her out of the building quickly, partially using the five-year-old as a reason to get out of the awkward situation I would have been trapped in otherwise.

As soon as we got to the park and Frances ran off to go play, I sat on a park bench to text about what had happened in the coffee shop, because why not embarrass myself more, this time to a friend.

Me: Alright, so there was this guy in the coffee shop, and I hadn't seen him before and I thought it was a little strange because nobody new ever goes there and he caught me looking at him and honestly shoot me in the head.

Peggles 🍋☀️🌼🐥: was he cute

My face went red at that, of course that was the first thing Peggy wanted to know. I mean, he definitely was but still, I hadn't been thinking about it.

Me: Maybe a little...

Peggles🍋☀️🌼🐥: oooooooooh ☺️😏

Me: Oh, shut up, Peggy.

Peggles🍋☀️🌼🐥: 🤐

Me: 🖕

I chuckled and put my phone away, watching Frances as she went down the slide. She looked so happy. She ran over to me, "Daddy, Daddy, push me on the swing!"

I smiled as she tried to hop up onto the swing, needing help from me. She held onto the chains as I pushed her, letting her swing back and forth as she kicked her legs.

I wish I could get her to wear something warmer, it's almost Christmas and it's cold out, and yet Frances still refuses to wear a jacket or coat. I keep telling her she's gonna get sick, but Frances is one of the most stubborn kids I've ever met and not once in her life has ever agreed to do something she doesn't want to do without a massive fit and half of my sanity draining beforehand.

A few hours later, we were on our way home, Frances half asleep. She has a lot of energy but when she gets tired she gets very tired. I suddenly remembered that we're supposed to be staying with Peggy and her family tonight until New Years. I sighed softly as I carried Frances home to do some extremely last-minute packing.

I threw some clothes and other things that we'd definitely need into a bag and grabbed Frances. Peggy's house was walking distance, and not hard to find considering not only had I been there too many times to count, but her dad was absolutely loaded so it wasn't, like, some little cottage or something.

When we got there, Frances had fallen asleep in my arms and carrying a five-year-old is different than carrying a newborn, especially when it's dead weight like that, and I was carrying a bag that was much less heavy but I'm not exactly the strongest person in the world, so my arms were hurting.

I knocked on the door, Peggy's sister Eliza answering. I smiled and waved.

"Hi!" Eliza said in her usual friendly tone. She'd always been an absolute angel, I don't think she was physically capable of doing anything other than something nice. She let us in and even offered to hang up my coat for me, but I did it myself.

"Johnnnnnnnn!" I heard the familiar voice squeal as Peggy practically tackled me to the ground. I smiled and Frances practically fell over laughing. Peggy stood up and bowed, "Thank you; thank you. I'll be here for the rest of your lives."
