EVEN THOUGH Elliot Fintry was the master when it came to wiping ones face clean of all emotions, even he couldn't stop feeling something from time to time.

When he was younger he wasn't as reserved as he is now but, when he was younger, he was naïve and he has learnt over time that naivety will get you nowhere in a world with a majority of those who don't. Growing up in a world of those who don't didn't exactly give him a chance to 'open up,' so he didn't. In fact, nobody outside of his family and The Witches knew an awful lot about him.

But when those who do became those who did, he found no point in opening up to people. Especially when, in the end, everyone who does becomes those who did. Death is an inevitability that not even the strongest or most loved can avoid.

The problem with death, Elliot has found, is not what it takes but what it leaves behind.

Sure, death took his father, but it left Elliot without a friend, a mentor, a role model, a piece of himself. How was he meant to cope, meant to live normally, when a piece of his heart had been ripped from him? People can't live properly with only half a heart.

"Lee, are you coming or what? Jensen wants to know," Violet asked, leaning against the door and crossing her arms over her chest.

Violet, an undoubtable one who does, was another thing that went when their father died. They didn't have one of those inseparable sibling bonds when they were younger but they were close. When Elliot felt his older sister, the only person that he was absolutely sure he loved in this world, slowly slip through his fingers he didn't have the heart to close them. From that point on, everyone slipped through them as easily as water.

As much as he denied it, he missed his sister. So much. The frightening thing was how like she was to him, or he was to her. Elliot could see so much of himself, and their dad, in Violet and it scared him - he did not want her to turn out like he did. Someone in the Fintry family had to stay intact, otherwise their shattered remains would mix and they wouldn't be able to get themselves back together.

"I'll go with option number two: 'or what,' Vi," he replied nonchalantly.

"She said you'd say that. Actually, I said you'd say that and she agreed instantly."

"Why bother asking me then?"

Violet rolled her eyes. "Because, even though you don't give a shit about most things in life, I know you give a shit about her."

Violet knew. Violet always knew how to get to him, tug at his heartstrings, and it was the most annoying thing on earth. Elliot disliked people knowing how to get to him, and Violet, not only being the person who knew absolutely everything about Elliot but knowing how to use it as well, liked knowing how to get inside of people's minds. It was a clash of two strengths, so to speak: Elliot, the unmovable mountain and Violet, the gushing wind that chipped away it at, slowly but surely.

He stood up and walked over to Violet. Even though she was older, she wasn't taller than him. Elliot usually had about an inch or so over her but Violet had heels on today, making them see eye to eye - literally, not figuratively.

"People always assume that I don't give a shit, and they're actually wrong most of the time. I do give a shit but circumstance and life screwed me over, I don't have the patience to correct it."

"Oh, come off your high horse, Lee. You are not the only person on this earth who has been screwed over by life."

Seeing the Fintry siblings go head to head was something of a sight. The mountain and the wind; the ice and the fire, the two things that absolutely refused to move, and this wasn't them at a full capacity argument.
