It was an ordinary morning, and my eyes stung with the sunlight that tickled the tip of my eyelashes. I yawned, my eyelids fluttering open, and stared at the mess in front of me. My legs were sprawles onto the covers, which were now indented in my foot and strewn everywhere, hanging limp off my mattress. My face tingled at the warm scent that wafted upon my senses, and my pupils strained to see what was going on. It seemed like a whole other world downstairs, but the attic was a good place to be cooping out in, especially after you spilled coffee and hot spicy fish on your mother, not to mention you blew flour all over while making gingerbread, and accidentally- yes- accidentally tripped over your mother's heels and possibly ripped the heel part of it, sending shoe bits scattering all over the wood floor. The neighbors would shake their heads and groan at the sight of me, and they kept their items away from my grasp, as if my thrusting hold could break the item and cause a major world-wide catastrophe to occur.
At least today was the start of a new day. And today was a very treasured day.
I practically slid downstairs in a hurried motion, the scent of pancakes searing through my mind. It was all a fantasy, possibly? My mind was most likely tricking me. A grin spread onto my face. Why, that little deceiving-
When I reached downstairs, there was nothing.
It truly was my mind tricking me.
It had been three years since my trip to U.A., and as any ordinary 18 year old, I was kicked out of my house to make a living...and survive. Every kid was trained to succeed and prove their triumph to their parents, but I felt like I had nowhere to start. No solid foundation, no schooling, no finance, and no money. Just the clothes in my drawer and me against the outside world.
Society.
My hand gripped the door handle tightly, wondering as to what I should do. Should I head out in these rags, or should I take my time to dress-to-impress?
I didn't have to decide, as my door was slapped with a knocker twice. And as I took a small look through the peephole and found a glance of a peppermint haired boy, I realized that it was time to get fancy.
If you called a sweatshirt and pants fancy, of course.
My hands gripped the doorknob tightly, anticipating as to what could come next. Not surprisingly, I had the whole hood over my head, almost as if not wanting to expose my hair. It stood out very often, and I'm not sure if the lovely looking boy at the door would be quite appalled with the radiant green frolicking around the curly locks. Oh, he would definitely be appalled, but in a manner that says "it's a disgusting green, and it looks very freakish on you, good sir." I felt slightly discouraged, my eyes fell a little as I pictured a face of laughter...hysterical laughter. Laughter that encompassed me and had me a discriminated part of this society. My eyes, my face, what if the guest at the door decided that even my own smile was good enough for him.
Then the knock came again.
"A-Ah! coming!" I called aloud, pretending to take magnificent footsteps toward the door. And as I- again- peeked through my peephole, my words were caught in my throat as I stared at a dazzling red and white haired boy, codominance taking over as both his eyes are also a dashing two-colored match for him. And I was no match for that. However, I sucked in my breath and let the doorknob push open.
"Todoroki!" I gasped, my face a mixture of flushed embarrassment and a quirky smile.
"Merry Christmas...Midoriya..." the boy said, his usual blank face and non-existent smile peaking above all else. His mouth, though not quivering, showed a small- tiniest- smile that proved his pleasure of being here. His eyes...though...showed a flare of sparkling amusement that did not cease to flare. "You look...remarkable," he complimented, staring at my hood that was tucked over my hair, smoothing it down. "Ah, yes, you too, thank you," I said, abashed, thinking that throwing the hood over me last-minute was a good idea. Better than my hideous look that brought shame upon my family. And it can't happen again.
However...it was so sudden...
His hand brushed my hood, lightly grazing my cheek as he gently pulled back the cover that shielded my green atrocity from the world. My mouth hung ajar as Todoroki let the hood fall, exposing the fluff of turquoise green. I shut my eyes, ready for a reprimand on the quality.
It took me by surprise to hear three contrasting words.
"It looks...extraordinary," Todoroki murmured, sweeping my breath away. "Quite impressive, eh?"
My face was definitely turning red as ushered him in. The heat rose to my ears, and I bashfully led him to the living room, the Christmas tree a twinkling sight to behold by the magnificent burning fire, glaring ever so brightly. The red and white haired boy plopped on the couch, making himself at home. I stared at his frame, filled with such dignity and praised posture. Though I did hope that he had not caught my indecisive staring, he nevertheless caught my glance, and I quickly turned away, wondering if sweat was now making its way down my forehead.I then heard a small...muffled piece of laughter. Laughter, it was? Oh, the most heavenly peppermint haired boy chuckled at this sort of thing! Who could ever thought that the most straight faced person could find a sense of humor?
"Oh, Midoriya," Todoroki laughed, light wheezing fluttering off his chest. I couldn't help but laugh too, since he was...I suppose. And his laugh, it was a genuine laugh. The smile plastered on his face showed pure radiance and joy.
"Now, Midoriya, it'd be best if we stayed by the fire, perhaps a while? You understand how cold it is on this Christmas day, I assume?"
I felt stunned, seeing as how unprepared I was for this.
"R-Right!" I stuttered, hurrying back and forth. "And the movie, too," I added, flipping between channels to get to the desired spot. To my surprise, an arm snatched me from the air and threw me down onto the couch. "A-Agh!" I cried aloud, feeling the cushions snatch me mid-air. The only thing I saw in front of me was a face that gazed back at me curiously. "Midoriya, the top student at U.A., and a year later he falls to a small flick on the arm?" He questioned amusingly. I clenched on my teeth and put a hand to my face, wanting to rid of this embarrassment.
"Oh, do get that hand off your face," Todoroki mused, gently removing my arm from my face, my oh-so-red face. He then laughed, a warm and hearty laugh, and I felt at such ease.
"Alright, Todoroki, settle down and enjoy the movie," I said, a small smile on my face as I faced the fire, wanting to look away. I, however, did find myself taking such glances at him, almost as if desiring something.
What exactly did I desire?
As the day wore on, it became exceptionally cold, and I felt myself huddling in areas of the couch for warmth. It truly was a cold Christmas. Yet as I buried myself into an emptiness, I found a small arm that reached over and took my whole body and gracefully let it lean towards his. I tensed, though gradually began to relax as the breathing from his chest rose and fell rhythmically to the air itself, with the fire that blazed ebony and rested upon the hearth, sending crackles of logs and sparks into the air before diminishing entirely.
And I wanted it.
It was just us.
