Chapter 1  Part 2:

The Present

What is that?  Whimpering?  I can’t make out that sound what the hell is that?

                Shink, shink, shink.

                Thump, thump. Thump, thump.

A knife being sharpened, for what.  “AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!” I yell.  The nerves in my chest are screaming at my mind as a blade breaks the skin. Feeling the rip of the cold hardness of a blade as it tears my skin, like fabric down the right side of my chest.   Relief, from the warm metal object as it is pulled from my body.

Panting as I am out of breath.  Slipping back into the dark void of unconsciousness.  I must stay awake. Ask a question!

                Scared as hell I ask, W-w-who a-a-re you?  Pu-Please, h-help m-mee, d-d-don’t hu-hur-hurt me. Pl-pleazzz. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

Again the Metal object penetrates my skin, although it’s the left side now. My nerves exploding with pain as the sensation of me being skewered rips through my brain.

RELIEF again, the metal object has been pulled out of my skin.

                Unconsciousness…

The air is cool in the darkness and the stars shine brightly above our heads. To the south as if stopped by the evil that the heretics bring, anvil clouds wait to consume our stars.  The bonfires are fed to blaze trying to vanquish the fear and excitement in the air.  Failing to do so, electricity buzzes all around as the soldiers rush here and there.

Getting on my armor was extremely fast for the first time, it did not take thirty notches off my candle. It seemed that time slowed from the arrival of the heretic army.  Every man went by at lightning speed as the army got ready for the battle to come.  I walk through the camp and see that the veterans have a grim look of satisfaction and excitement preparing their equipment for slaughter.  The hundred yard look was in all of their faces, as if contemplating what they would do in battle. The thought’s of old battles going through each of their minds and smiles of gratification of knowing that they were ready for the next battle.

The younger less experienced soldiers rallied around their leaders, to gain moral from comrades that were just as scared as they were.  The confidence of having each other’s back from all the practice and training they did.  Knowing that some of the soldiers around them, would not live to tell their stories.  Still I felt sorrow for the thought of losing some of them.  My place would be by the side of the Lord General, as one of his body guards on the battlefield.

Walking up to my horse, I pat his nose and say, “Old friend, there is a big army out there that wishes to destroy everything that we live for.  Let’s not let that happen and keep the Lord General alive.”

“Is it wiser to pray to the gods rather than to your horse milord.” A high pitched voice says as I turn around.

“Kale, I hope for you to stay safe and be sure that my horse is ready when it is time.” Clapping the forearm of the squire issued to me by the Lord General.  At first I did not want this squire. I wanted to pick my own squire. But Kale turned out to be a god send and was fast becoming one of my best friends.  His light humorous personality won me over.  He was small, young and I don’t think he could lift a sword even to defend himself.  He had a caring way about himself that did not fit the regime of being a lord of the Knights Watch.  His blond hair always got into his eyes when practicing with wooden sticks.  Which of course caused most of his bruises, but his pale blue eyes had an intelligence that told of some type of pain and experience.
