Let's Talk: Covers

People say that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but that's exactly what we often do. If you aren't getting many reads, votes, or comments, it could be because people simply don't find your book cover interesting enough.

How do you make it interesting? Invest in a professional looking cover, or create your own for free. You can use Wattpad for this, but I prefer using Canva. Canva has a variety of different fonts, graphics, and examples of beautiful Wattpad covers. Spend a little bit of time experimenting, and make your dream cover.

Readers click on covers that are visually appealing. Readers do not click on covers that are all over the place, make little sense, and look like you spent two minutes on. The more time you spend tweaking your cover, the better. You don't have to have an award-winning cover that's an artistic masterpiece, but at least put some effort into it. Use websites like Pexels and Unsplash for photos that aren't copyrighted.

Is your cover still not selling? Try making sure that it has these four crucial elements on display.

1) Contrast

Add contrasting colors to your cover, it's not hard. Contrasting colors make your cover stand out.

2) Symmetry

Use this with caution. Symmetry can instantly make a cover look more professional and enticing, but covers that aren't perfectly symmetrical can also sell. Center your title, your name, your background, make it look pretty and watch the read count rise.

3) Color

What can I say? Colors are attractive. Colors draw our eyes in. Pick a color scheme that tells readers about your story, it's not as hard as it sounds. Use calmer colors like blue and green for a calmer book. Brighter like red and orange to invoke excitement. Don't go nuts with the colors though, it's a color SCHEME, not color mayhem.

4) Simplicity

This one is easy. Don't have a crazy cover. Make sure that your cover isn't cluttered, and add a simple, clear, background. Cluttered covers scream inexperienced.

If you're still at a loss, ask people. Ask them what you can do to make your cover better. Ask them what they like, and don't like. Take their advice and implement it.
