Their Meeting

"Good night Elsa."

"Good night Papa..." The little girl responded as she clung to her comforter. Her father's smile was warm as if to spark some hope into his frightened daughter.

"Sweet dreams, my little one. " He told her once more as he closed the door to her room. The air was chilly and dark. Frost and icicles began forming on the walls. She brought her comforter up to her nose and she was muttering her key phrase, "Conceal... Don't feel."

I stood in the darkest corner of her room, behind the closet watching her. Her fear had summoned me, and I came to give the little mare a visit, however I didn't expect it to be such a little girl. A girl born with an incredible magical gift when coupled with fear would become her worst nightmare. She was afraid of hurting her family whom she loved so much. I couldn't feel happy... I only felt pity for the little girl and her suffering.

"W-Who's there?" She asked fearfully looking around the girl. Poor thing. She must live in constant fear.

"C-Come out." She ordered looking in my direction. She must have been hoping for whatever hallucinatory monster to finally come out of its hiding place and devour her whole. This girl didn't need to sleep. She was already living her nightmare.

"You with the golden eyes..." She said softly, creeping further behind her comforter. Golden eyes? Was she referring...to me? Could... Could she see me?

I crept out of the shadows and into the moonlit room. Her face was filled with curiosity, not fear as she watched me. Her eyes never left mine. I stood in the middle of the room and she sat on her bed.

The encounter was strange to say the least. It's been 500 years since the last time any human saw me and now, she sees me. It fascinated me. I wanted to know more about this little girl, but she stopped me with an outstretched hand.

"Don't come any closer!"

Because I'm scary and you don't want me to hurt you.

"I don't want to hurt you..." She continued to say, allowing her comforter to fall from her hands as she now used both hands to stop me from coming any closer.

I was...surprised. Here this little girl was afraid of hurting me, a stranger she didn't even know. I know I don't usually, but I smiled to ease her fears. An unusual feat on my behalf.

"Don't worry. You can't hurt me." I informed her, walking closer to her. She kept her guard up though I could tell, she was slightly confused.

"I can't?" She asked me, clearly confused.

"That's right. You can't hurt me." I reassured her, sitting at the foot her bed. She looked at me with those big, blue eyes as if she was trying to ingrain my inhumane looks to memory. Then she laughed a soft, quiet one.

"You look funny. Your skin is gray like ash." She teased holding my cheek and stretching it. Her touch felt weird. It wasn't just cold. It was warm too. The area where she stretched didn't feel any pain, only numbness. She must've realized I was staring because she started to laugh again.

No one... has ever touched me. Not since I lost my family so long ago and not since my daughter became a guardian.

"Your eyes are strange." She teased again, still laughing. This snapped me out my trance and I laughed a little too.

"Are they really?" Maybe I started to sound how I usually act. I'm not sure. This little girl was bringing out sides I didn't think was possible.

She nodded in response and said, "Yep. They're the weirdest I've ever seen." She then laughed, and she was smiling as she laughed.

For being a Guardian of Fear, I wasn't doing a very good job of keeping her afraid. In fact, I didn't need to. Even though she was smiling and laughing, she was still afraid. She was afraid of hurting her new friend. So, in a way, I was still doing my job, as twisted as it sounds.

"Well, you're also the weirdest girl that I've ever seen." It was the truth. Who wouldn't be afraid of me... The Boogeyman?

"How so?" She asked, tilting her head. So cute.

"Well, most children are afraid of me. I'm the monster under the bed that they're all afraid of." Admittedly, I was surprisingly upset at telling this little girl this information about me. Why? Was it because she brought out the other, long-forgotten side of me? I would beg to differ.

"So, you're the one Anna is afraid of." She said, almost out of speculation. I knew Anna to be her little sister and yes, at one point she was afraid of me. But even at the tender age of 5, she's afraid of things a normal five-year-old shouldn't fear.

"Was afraid of. But yes, that is true." I answered her, moving over to the other side of her bed. Why you ask? I don't even know.

"But they shouldn't be afraid of you." She declared. I would normally declare statements like these an insult, but I was curious.

"Why do you say that?"

"Because you're really friendly. Also, you walk funny." She said, laughing again. Honestly, though she's a bit more timid than her sister, they're the same.

Yet, I enjoyed that. I enjoyed being in her company. It was unusual to say the least, though unusual is the word I can use to describe this encounter.

The grandfather clock in the hallway struck twelve and the gong echoed throughout. It was already midnight. I had spent too much time here. There are other places I must be.

I turned to leave through the shadows behind her closet, but I felt her grab my hand. It cold, warm and soft... I turned back to see the little girl's face so full of fear. It was delightful.

"Please... Don't leave."

She doesn't want to be alone. Another one of her fears.

"I have to leave. I have other places to go to." I told her truthfully, though my voice may not be as warm as it needed to be.

"Will... Will you come back then?" She asked me, looking up at me with moonlit eyes so full of hope. Hope... That's what that dammed kangaroo is for.

"Maybe I will." I told her, smiling though I'm not sure of when I did that. Her face lit up, it was good to see that.

"Will you come back tomorrow then?" She asked. She looked so adorable besides, I enjoyed my stay here tonight. There was no reason to say no.

"Yes, I will." I was now kneeling at the side of her bed again and our eyes met once more. She was tired and needed her rest.

"My name is Pitch Black. What's yours?" No harm in telling her my true name.

"Princess Elizabeth Arendelle Glücksburg... But everyone calls me Elsa." She answered me truthfully. I passed my hand through her neatly braided hair and messed it up.

"Hey!"

"I will come see you tomorrow. I promise. You won't be lonely anymore."

It was a promise that started one of the best few years after the Dark Ages and I don't regret it.
