Chapter Nine:
Love Triangle
I hated getting emotional like this, it made me feel vulnerable. I rarely cry out of happiness, only out of anger. Why did I now? Perhaps it was because I loved them too—who couldn’t love them?
I now realized exactly what situation I was in. I was in a Love Triangle and I didn’t even notice it! Cory loved me and Clay loved me, but they were both too competitive about it. It was like a race to the finish—and I was the grand prize. I wonder what the second prize was; a life lesson? How could I make it stop without hurting Cory even more? It seemed borderline impossible—or maybe just plain impossible.
Cory called me twice yesterday to thank me for the gift—I think his mother made him. But Cory is getting nicer, although it is slow and steady. I was grateful for his attempts
Today is December 31st—New Year’s Eve. Tomorrow is my birthday, but no one knows. I don’t want them to know; this emotional stuff is really getting on my nerves.
Clay is still mad at Cory, but peace seems to hold its ground for now. I wondered when the burst of a chaotic mess would form.
Work, Luna, think about work. I told myself this constantly as I got changed into a plain dark green V-neck with my new necklace. I walked into the kitchen and got out a new capsule, pouring it into an eight-ounce glass.
Ugh, Clay. I thought as I heard him stand behind me.
“Hey,” I slowly turned around to greet Clay. He was still trying to scare me, it wasn’t working.
“You know there’s a difference between scaring someone, and catching them off guard.” I laughed. He gave me a smile, but in his head he was formulating another plan.

Coconut is slowly getting better. Today they were taking out her stitches, so all I had to do was feed her.
Chloe is a Russian Blue cat. She is very muscular and, like Radish, she learned at a young age how to hunt. Unlike Radish, she does live on a farm with horses. She got stepped on by one of the petulant horses. It had been a windy day, and the horses were acting up because of it. As a result, her paw was crushed and she has to wait a month or two for it to heal somewhat, then she gets a hard cast to replace the soft one and she can return to the farm, but under constant watch until her next appointment.
Chloe liked the cat treats a lot, but she refused to take them by hand. Instead I hid them behind me, where she would have to work to get them, but not be scared by me at the same time. She couldn’t trust me, especially not with her crushed paw.
After writing in my log I decided to go back into the kennel to check on one animal in particular. I searched for a white cat. Pebbles was there, with his short white coat and ice blue eyes. He was naturally born deaf and had a spot of gray on his whiskers. He was now eight years old and aging fast.
Pebbles is Cory’s cat. He has cancer and is weak from the medicine. I worried that he wouldn’t make it. But I couldn’t let myself think that.

Clay and I had no more movies to watch, so instead we played my old board games. I had all the old games, the ones my father taught me to play when I was 15. I won easily, having been taught the game inside and out. Clay was getting angry, but hid it in his peaceful mask—talk about a poker face!
