Chapter Eight:
Countdown to Christmas
December 12th: After collecting my two month supply of deer blood, I had to get ready for work. My outfit wasn’t the best for this kind of weather, but it worked just fine for the warm building that I would be working in for most of the day.
Athena was very playful today; perhaps her successful therapy session had given her high spirits. At 5:15 I fed her at her scheduled time and by 5:30, I had her at the therapy room. Earlier I had tended to Radish.
Radish didn’t need therapy, for he had healed halfway overnight. Instead I gave him his antibiotics in his food at his scheduled time, 3:30. The time in between Radish and Athena was spent by bonding with the two patients.
When I came home I was exhausted, Clay had gone out to collect and find a herd that would trust him, so I went to sleep at six o’clock. I woke up at around 1:00.
December 13th: Clay had his sparkling yellow eyes watching me all night, waiting for me to wake from my dreamless sleep. I didn’t have to work today; it was a Sunday. On Sundays, owners come in to check on their pets. They care for them while they visit. Radish must have been so glad that he was leaving today; I was torturing him with kitty treats.
I woke up at one and had my breakfast. Clay told me that he found a herd but knew it would take a while to earn their trust, so he collected from mine. He had his eye on a young, impetuous bull. This bull was inexperienced, just like mine was when I earned his trust.
For the rest of the morning we watched more comedies and finished off Psycho. That was one messed up movie. That afternoon, we visited Mrs. Asher who I now call Levi. I was still astounded by the brilliance of their house.
Mrs. Asher, or Levi, told me how she should have bought a house near the woods, where it would look much prettier. But, of course, she had decided that living in the town would give her a chance to brag about her house’s brilliance. Then again, living in the woods had its perks. It would allow her to mow the lawn at night, therefore not needing her son to do it for her. She’d be a free woman.
Levi showed me how to play the piano. I learned fast. Her brilliant smile encouraged me to keep going. By the end of the day I had learned ten symphonies in all.
Clay and I left her house at around six. When we got home he helped me pick out an outfit for school tomorrow; he really likes blue.
Late that night we cuddled together on the couch and watched lame romance movies. The actors in this are nothing like me, all vulnerable women who need a man to take care of them 24/7. It was hilarious. The movies didn’t last long, but the stars did. The sky was cloudless tonight and it was a full moon. Clay and I lay in the snow and watched the stars all night, picking out all the different constellations. I could easily say that it had been the best night of my life, by far.
December 14: After getting changed, I had breakfast. Clay left to bond with his newer herd, but he collected from mine just in case. After he was going to drop the clean capsule and needle off at Levi’s so that she could collect from my herd later tonight. I shivered at the thought of them cowering at another stranger, so I told Clay to go with her early this morning instead.
First period the teacher gave us a new project. It was rather boring. My partner did nothing until I explained to him that we would get many a worse grade if he didn’t help in any way. So he started looking up pictures to decorate with. At least he learned something this period.
