A clipping mask is an easy way to shade and do patterns.
Starting with a base of the main colors, create a new layer above the colors.
Then make that layer a clipping layer.
Then add the pattern
This is how it looks if you take the clipping off
Much easier than trying to select the whole thing then coloring it in that way
Then just merge the layers together together and it keeps the clipping
This also works for shading.
Just an explanation for people who aren't aware of this works.
