"And then she started to gossip about Connor and Jess. I was all like, "You know that they don't even know each other...right? You can't just ship strangers." Goldie was telling us about our day and how one of her popular friends, Alice, was a hopeless romantic.
She didn't seem to notice that Peter wasn't paying attention. He had a new pair of glasses on and he was jotting notes down in his journal while twirling his spoon around in a cup of hot chocolate. It was cold outside so we were hanging out at Stardollars. It was lightly snowing outside and christmas was around the corner. How come I felt excited? Christmas was one of my least favourite times of year. It was freezing, I was always surrounded by people who were happy, people were buying presents with their family. Something that I had never experienced. And yet when I was with my friends, everything felt worth it. Everything felt peaceful.
"You ok?" Goldie asked, "You just started daydreaming out of nowhere."
"Ya, I was just thinking about what you guys want for christmas." I lied.
"You don't have to get us anything. Your time is enough, I know you're always super busy. It's a miracle you have the opportunity to ever spend time with us."
Yikes. She was bringing up one of my cover stories. Since my mom wouldn't let me leave the house, I have to usually sneak out. And there's always a chance I could get caught or I wouldn't have an opportunity to leave. So I had told Goldie and Peter that I had a younger cousin I had to babysit all the time and that it would be rare that I would get to hangout with them. They believed it, it was a harmless lie to keep my secret safe.
"Are you still writing that story?" Goldie asked Peter.
He nodded and continued to write. "I'm trying to finish it before christmas so I can edit it after New Years." He explained, his pencil never leaving the paper.
Goldie continued to tell me her day as I joyfully listened. She was so happy all the time. It was amazing that she could keep herself together so easily.
"I'm going to order some pastries, do you guys want anything?" Peter asked as he closed his book and started to get up from the booth.
"Can you grab me a hot chocolate?" I asked.
"A chai tea latte and a cake pop for me please." Goldie added.
"Order up," Peter joked and got up to stand in the long line that lead to the register. It was going to take him forever to get to the end of that line.
"I'm going to the restroom, I'll be right back." Goldie announced as she left me alone.
I nodded silently. I had to enjoy every moment I was with my friends. Who knew how long it would last. Though I had a feeling our friendship would last forever.
Peter had left his journal on the table. I grabbed it and started flipping through the pages. They were filled with character designs, notes, sketches, and actual pages of the book he was writing. I finally found the page I read last and continued to read. Peter is an extremely talented writer, I always get mesmerized in his words when I read his story. Maybe that's why I didn't hear a stranger sit down across from me.
"What are you reading?"
I looked up to see a young man in front of me. He looked tall, maybe 17 or 18 years old... He had deep blue eyes and messy brown hair. And he was sitting right in front of me.
"Hm?" I mumbled. Right. Genius. Mumble at the handsome stranger like an idiot.
He smiled fondly at me. "Is that your diary?"
"W-What!? No! Of course not. It's just a journal that my friends writes in. He writes amazing stories."
"That sounds incredible, do you write about anything?" He asked.
