I started packing. I was packing my backpack to prepare for tonight. I was running away. I recently discovered that I'd been mutated. Oh joy. A mutation is like, well, you basically get magical abilities. Weird ones... like for example, me, I can do shit with shadows. Like I can disappear into them, blend in with them, sometimes make them, control them. Yada yada.

I packed the stuffed bear that my birth parents gave me when I was born. The soft tone of my mother's singing, the strong scent of my father's cologne. Both implanted into my brain. But they....

I sighed and zipped my backpack after shoving a few more things in there, as well as the essentials. I threw on a green Champion hoodie and some sweatpants. I placed my backpack in the corner and left it alone. I didn't pack my laptop or phone and my chargers and stuff yet. I did pack my gun though. I stole it from Cabela's.

I plopped down on my bed, waiting to be called downstairs for lunch. I lived with three other people. They were all my foster parents' real kids. There was Abby, she was six, Jason, he was seventeen(a year older than me), and Kayla, who was thirteen. I surfed the internet until Trina, my stepmom, shouted, "Lunch is ready!" I clumsily made my way down to the kitchen of hell.

I slumped down in my seat and started eating my sandwich. I mean don't get me wrong, it's cool here. Though it gets boring and I get sick of people. When I finished, I went right back up to my room.

I waited until Tina's footsteps faded and I heard nothing but silence from downstairs. I swiped my bag from the corner and looked behind me one last time before climbing out the window into the oak tree beside it. I swiftly jumped down from the lowest branch I could access. I looked around for anyone that could have possibly seen me. I saw nothing so I started walking.

Along the way, all of a sudden I heard a voice from above. "If you can hear this, you're a mutant. Relocate to-" Then it cut off. I shrugged it off. Though I was a bit curious. A while later I heard it again. But this time it told me an address. I slipped my phone out of my back pocket and typed it into Google Maps. It was a trailer park that wasn't too far from here. I figured, what the heck. I've got nothing better to do so why not? So I started walking in the direction that my phone told me to go.

About an hour later, I took a pitstop at a gas station. I went to the bathroom and got some food and water. When I got up to the register, it was a bit too much money so I bolted. I cursed under my breath as I ran outside and faded into the shadow by the wall. It was dark but I could still see outside.

My hands were trembling so bad I dropped my water. They must've heard it because they started shouting. I ran as far as I could. So did they. I skidded into an alleyway and faded into the shadow by a trashcan. I heard one of them mutter, "Sick kid." When I heard silence, I slowly crept out of the alleyway and looked around. Nothing. I started walking again as I shoved the food and water in my bag.
