"Coming, Max!" You called out as you heard a knock on your apartment door. You quickly finished lacing up your snow boots and snagged your (f/c) scarf off of the standing coat hanger, almost toppling it over in the process. You opened the door as you looped the scarf around your neck. At the door stood the all too familiar boy, your best friend, Max. He stood at your doorstep with a pensive look on his face. There were unmelted snowflakes caught in his hair and eyelashes, and as his emerald eyes flicked up to meet yours, he gave a slight smile.
"Hey there, cutie! Ready to go?" You patted the short boy's fluffy, dark hair, your usual greeting. You always teased him about his short stature, and greeting him this way was your way of quieting his ego by reminding him of his height.
"Yep," Max replied, smiling at your touch, then immediately reaching up to fix his hair when you looked away. "what took you so long?" The two of you began to walk down the apartment corridor.
"Oh, I just had to grab your Christmas gift, here!" You pulled a sealed, red envelope out of your peacoat pocket and handed it to him. "You don't have to open it now, if you don't want to."
Max looked at the envelope for a moment before putting it in his pocket. "Oh, thanks, (y/n). I have something for you too." The boy then brandished a small plastic bag from his pocket and handed it to you. Inside of the bag were three sugar cookies, one with icing, one peppermint, and one plain. They were all slightly burnt. "Those were the only good ones I managed to salvage from the batch. Sorry it's not much, I couldn't really afford anything. You know, between having to find a new job and place this year, there just wasn't a lot of-"
"Hey," You cut him off. "You know I understand, Max. These look lovely, thank you so much." By this time you were in the elevator, so you bent down and gave him a quick hug before the elevator doors open. A bit of color spread across Max's cheeks. He always got that way when you touched him.

You two passed through the lobby and out to the front of the building. You began walking into a path that led into the woods. During the warmer months, the trail would've usually been packed full of hikers, but since the ground was covered in a foot of snow, it was empty.

Just the two of you.

You opened the sandwhich bag and pulled out the peppermint cookie. You were about to bite into it when you realized that Max was looking at you with puppy-dog eyes, so you gave a slight 'aww' before splitting it and giving him half.
"It's so beautiful out." Max remarked. You nodded in response, not being able to say much with your mouth full of cookie. Besides being slightly burnt, it was delicious. You could tell that Max put a lot of love and care into making it.
"(Y/n), do you know why I asked you to come with me today?" The small boy asked.
"Yeah, to take pictures, of course!" You smile down at Max as a snowflake fell onto the tip of your nose. You then realized that Max didn't have his camera out. Considering that Max was a hobbyist photographer, it was very out of the ordinary that he wouldn't bring his camera into such a beautiful setting.
"No, idiot," he shook his head. "I wanted to thank you."
You stopped dead in your tracks. "For what?"
Max turned around to face you. "For everything that you've done for me. Between helping me get away from my parents, to supporting my financial struggles, you've been a real one through it all. I think that at least deserves a formal thank you, so that's why I brought you here."
"Aw, Max, that's so sweet of you." You smiled, and a blush spread across your sheepish face.
Usually Max would've rolled his eyes at the comment, but he just smiled. "Thank you, really." You could tell he was being genuine.
"Max, it's no problem. You know I would do anything for you, and it would kill me to see you struggle."
Max nodded, and the same pensive look from earlier swept across his face.
You bent down and gave him a peck on the cheek. "Thank you for being such a great friend, Max." Now you were the one thanking him.

"(Y/n)?"
"Yes, Max?"
Without warning, Max grabbed your scarf and yanked it so your heads were inches apart. You almost toppled over from the sudden force, and were in too much shock to realize that Max had grabbed your face and smashed his lips into yours.
It was a quick kiss, only a few seconds long, but it was long enough to get your adrenaline pumping. Max held your face in his hands, a conceded look plastered on his cardboard face as he awaited your reaction.
All you could let out was a slow, delirious, laugh. He returned it as he let go of your face.
"Oh Max, if you felt that way, why didn't you just say so? I've been waiting for you to tell me. C'mere, you." You tackled Max onto the snow and returned his affection.

(bonus)

A red envelope fell from a coat pocket as Max hung it up. He sat down onto the couch of his apartment and slowly opened it up. He pulled out a folded piece of paper, and a shower of smaller paper clippings came down as he unfolded the paper. He looked at the small clips of paper that were now scattered around his couch. They were all pictures of him and (y/n) together from throughout their years of being friends. A smile formed at the corners of his lips as he began to read the note.

Dear shorty,

You mean the world to me.
