"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" David repeated as he lead you hand-in-hand towards your home. He had planned a "David" night out, which consisted of hanging out in the woods for a few hours. Unfortunately, you two resided in the northeast United States, and it was, unfortunately, the coldest night of the year. David had ignored the news channels and websites yelling: "The high of today is only two degrees fahrenheit (-17 celcius) tonight, so make sure you stay indoors! With such a low temperature and very high winds, frostbite is inevitable after being out there for more than an hour!"
It didn't help that you didn't wear much either, just a coat and gloves. With no scarf, your cheeks and nose were stung red from the cold. A harsh curtain of hail began to fall from the sky as David picked you up and hauled your weakened body up the driveway and through the door.
"I'm sorry!" David repeated this phrase over and over as he kicked the door to your house opened, and he didn't stop until he had set you down onto the living room sofa.
David began to sprint around the house, his boots echoing against the wood floor. He came back to you a few minutes later with every blanket in the house in his arms. He placed the huge pile on the floor and very carefully began draping the blankets over your shivering body, one by one. You were too out of it to thank him or react, you were focused on how freezing you were, and wondering if you might die.
Meanwhile, David had finished draping the blankets over you and began toiling at the fireplace. He was easily able to start a fire. He smiled at his work for a moment before scrambling to his feet and running to the kitchen.
Between the blankets and the fire, you were starting to come back to life. Your trembling slowed, and you regained some feeling in your legs and face. You eventually gathered enough strength to sit up. You stared at the fire that your husband had made, and marveled at its beauty. As David's steps were heard again, a sweet scent filled the room. Your husband sat down next to you. He had removed his coat, and was now adorned in a red ugly Christmas sweater, with a mug in each hand. He pressed one of the mugs into your hands. Coca. You took in the sweet scent as you allowed the liquid to warm your freezing fingers.
"Hey," David said after taking a long sip of his drink. The sound of his voice warmed you even more. His voice was so soft and so caring, and it made you happy to just think of it. "Sorry again for almost letting you freeze to death. It was selfish of me to take you out in this weather."
You smiled. You couldn't be mad at him. "It's fine, David." Your eyes met his. His green eyes looked into yours with wonder. That was one of the things you loved about him, he always looked at you like you were the most wonderful (woman/man) in the world. And it was true. David loved you with all of his heart. "I know you just wanted us to have fun."
"I-I did." David looked into his mug for a moment, almost embarrassed. "It's just that... we haven't done anything special in a while, since you got that job and all..."
Your eyes widened in shock. "I didn't know you felt that way! I'm so sorry!" You set your mug down on the coffee table in front of you and wrapped your arms around him.
"I wanted to tell you," he admitted sheepishly. "But I thought you'd get mad at me."
"David, please don't be afraid to be honest with me, I love you so much and I don't want us to drift apart because of this. Plus, I could never be mad at you."
A smile formed on his lips as he took another sip of coca. The warm glow of the fireplace brought light to his face and accented his beautiful red hair and adorable freckles.
You stroked your hand along his face and cupped his flushed cheek. He leaned into your hand and closed his eyes and purred momentarily before looking back up at you, his head still leaned into your hand.
"Next time," you said, "you tell me, okay?"
David nodded.
"Good." You said, and pulled him in closer. "Now that you told me, I'm going to start freeing up some time so we can do more fun things, okay?" David nodded again, and you gave him a passionate kiss. After pulling away, you looked into his eyes. "Why don't we start our first one now, while I have the time?"The fireplace had never been warmer.
