It all started innocent enough, like a birthday party.
There I was, with my best friend, August, drinking too much. August 31st always felt so urgent. It was the last day of Summer vacation, which meant school would start soon. That meant I'd be losing my will to live sometime next week. This year though, this year was different. It was Friday night. Meaning - two extra days of freedom. As I always say: "Long live everything that has no connections to school". And this, this was a reason to drink, not that we needed a reason.
Party was lame. I go to the boys only school, and know this, adolescent boys are way too cool to dance or have fun. Even August wasn't that interesting without the right company. I wasn't worried though, no, I had a plan.
I'll lay it down for you now, three easy steps:
Step one -
Walk out of the party at midnight.
Step two -
Meet my other best friend, Valerie, who was at a different birthday party.
Step three -
Hit the club. Have fun. Waste the night.
Seems simple enough, right?
Only, things are never simple. Not for me. I learned early on in life that things never happen the way I plan them. This time, of course, wasn't an exception.
The taxi pulled over at the town's center and August and I stumbled out of it. Getting wasted when you live in a small town is the best. Everything was within walking distance. You could jump the street and find a bakery to eat in or walk two streets down to get to the club. Also, we all lived close, so going back home wasn't a problem. It wasn't preferred, but it wasn't a problem. Odds were looking great. August and I were drunk enough to have fun, not drunk enough to spend the night in the ditch throwing up. The only thing left to do was wait for Valerie. Waiting for Valerie was a regular occurrence for us. Seriously, the girl seemed unable to get anywhere on time. Of course, she was always the one who picked the time. That didn't stop her in being late.
The deal was to meet up in front of the club. Naturally, plans had to be altered. We ran into a group of our friends. Nina was with them. She was having too much fun to go home now so she decided to stay with us. Together, we headed towards the club - "Sin City", not the best place in town, but our unbeatable favorite. My phone started ringing. The sounds of Taylor Swift filled the empty street. Thank God normal people slept at 1 AM, and those less normal were already spread around our town's four clubs.
"Hey", I answered the call.
"Hey", Tea's voice sounded over the phone. She is a friend of Valerie's and mine. Two of them were at the party together. "Where are you?", she asked.
"On our way to the club, we're halfway there", I answered.
"I'm in the taxi with Valerie", Tea said. "Can you wait for us, we'll be here in a minute. But please, don't take Valerie to the club. She's drunk and she had already thrown up once".
"Okay", I answered. That was the moment I realized things were about to take a wrong turn.
"Thanks", Tea said, trying to sound cheerful. Being cheerful is hard stuff when your friend is throwing up all over the backseat of the taxi.
They weren't there in the minute. Actually, they didn't come at all. I was starting to worry. I called Valerie. My phone rang a few times before she picked up.
"Where are you", she sounded half-dead.
"Waiting for you", I answered. One of my favorite past times was always getting onto Valerie's nerves, which wasn't a hard thing to do.
"I'm in front of the club waiting for you", she stated.
I sighed. I wish I could tell you this kind of thing didn't happen often, but with Valerie, they did. "We're coming, don't die", I said, hanging up.
