The Blue Eyes

(Reia's Point Of View)

It is three o' clock. One more hour until home time. Watching the clock tick by as the history teacher gives out to the Nerdy Chenzo. His real name is actually Charles, but everyone gave him the nickname Chenzo. Why? Because he wouldn't shut his mouth once in English class, he talked about how he would do anything to get a name like Lorenzo from a William Shakespeare play.

Yeah, I know. Weird nickname.

The teacher bent down in front of Chenzo and gave him the 'death look'.

"How many times do I have to tell you to stop disturbing me when I'm speaking, Charles?"

Charles looked down at his feet.

"Sorry, sir", He muttered. " I thought that I should correct you. The cold war didn't begin in 1921. It was in 1947, sir."

There was sniggering in the back of the class. Whispers of 'loser' and 'yeah, sir' went around the room.

"Hey, Reia", said Ethan next to me. "You should be there for Chenzo".

I rolled my eyes. "Cut the bull crap, Ethan".

Then there was 'oooing' going around the class.

"Oh, Reia!" Ethan put his hands in front of his face in 'fear'. "Such strong language!"

I just ignore him. He is not worth my time.

Chenzo walks back to his seat while students kick at his legs and try to trip him up.

Then the bell rang.

Everyone ran out of the classroom, pushing each other, throwing their bags on their back. Laughing and punching each other.

"Dogs", I mutter.

I walk over to Charles to check if he's okay. He is packing his bag slowly.

"Hey", I say quietly. "Everything's okay? Sorry about what happened back there".

He looks up. His cheeks are wet. He's crying.

"Don't listen to those freaks, Charles. You are smarter than that".

He looks at me straight in the eyes. His gaze is painful.

"I want to move out if this school, move out of this town and out of this country", he says seriously while putting his bag on his back.

I bite my bottom lip to stop myself laughing. He can be so damn dramatic sometimes.

"Don't say that. What would this school do without you? It would be filled with idiots".

Charles smiles at the thought.

"Maybe you're right. But I'm just sick of the same drama happening everyday".

I put my hand on his shoulder and smiled.

"Come to my house. My mum will make you some cookies. That is sure to make you feel better".

A couple of minutes later, we were outside the school area. Walking past shops and big hotels, talking about our plans for Christmas. Christmas is in one week. It is the seventeenth of December today.

" I want a dictionary for Christmas", says Charles. He looks at me waiting for me to say something.

A dictionary? Really? Okay, everyone has a wish for Christmas. But - a dictionary?

I laugh at the thought of Chenzo opening a present at Christmas day and seeing a large dictionary sitting on his lap.

"Why not?" I laugh. "A dictionary is a great idea".

Charles smiles sheepishly.

"Alright then, what do you want for Christmas, Reia?"

I see what he's doing. Trying to get the opportunity to laugh at me as well.

"Socks", I lie. I look at him with a serious face then burst out laughing.

"For real", he says.

"Fine", I sigh. "A puppy".

"What do you want to name it?"

"Well..."

Before I tell him that it is George, I notice something in the trees. I saw it there before, thought it was a shine from the sun, but I can see it clearer now.

Eyes.

Blue eyes.

They don't look like human eyes and it has black fur.

It's a wolf.

Before I could tell Charles, I trip over.

Charles gives me a hand to get up.

"Are you okay?" He asks. "You haven't spoken to me for at least one minute".

I look back at the trees to see if the wolf was still there. It's gone.

" Yeah", I answer. "I'm fine".

Then we continue walking and talk about my mum's delicious chocolate chip cookies.

I keep looking back at the trees to check if the wolf is still there. It's not.

Was I just seeing things or was it actually there?
