Fourteen year old Jack leaned his head back against the cool stone of the well which served as his home. How could his sister have more energy than he did? Maybe it was just because she was eight. For all Jack knew, his sister was just like every other eight year old.

Jack watched his sister as she flashed around the well. She was running faster than anyone would in any other world, but Jack didn't know that.

Jack and Jill had never been outside of their little world. The well and the maze were all they had ever known.

Of course, they were both wise beyond their years. They had grown up with the sisters after all. They were almost superhuman. Cunning, athletic, super senses, and pretty much any other power you could think of. They had it all.

They didn't know it though.

As Jill raced around the stone well faster than should have ever been possible, Jack's superhuman eyes simply focused absently on how her curly blonde pigtails bounced around happily and how her elation shone in her bright blue eyes. She looked so different than he did. Jack had copper skin, so different than her pale complexion. His eyes were a light brown, and his hair was dark too.

The sisters often told them they were like the sun and the moon. Jack was strikingly warm and protective. He looked sun kissed. Jill was his opposite, but at the same time a reflection of him. She was cool and soft, and... silver.

Despite having such different colorations, you could never question that they were siblings. Their faces were shaped identically, as were their eyes. They finished each others sentences, not to mention that they reacted identically to everything. And the bonds of love between them were almost visible.

Just then the three sisters materialized in front of Jack. Jill skidded to a stop just before hitting them. Jack scrambled to his feet.

"Dinner's ready," the sister's told them in those voices that would be creepy if Jack and Jill hadn't grown up around them.

Jill went to stand by Jack.

Jack turned and began hauling the bucket up from the well. This was a normal routine.

The sisters came to stand around Jack and Jill. Jack went first. He shut his eyes and plunged his hand through the thick liquid. He drew out a plate of custard pie, the filling the same color as the liquid in the bucket.

Jill went next. Shutting her eyes, she twirled her finger on the surface of the treacle. What she'd drawn rose from the bucket, and she caught the handle of a giant swirled lollipop.

"Curious," murmured the sisters.

Jill didn't seem bothered. She sat down against the well, her little legs splayed out in front of her. She started licking at her dinner.

Jack sat next to her and started on his pie with his fork.

"Tell us a story," Jill begged the sisters.

Jack knew they would. They always did.

"About one of the other kingdoms," he requested.

"Please?" Jill asked.

"Alright," the sisters agreed. They sat themselves in front of Jack and Jill.

And the sisters began their tale, trading off whenever it fit the story.

"Once, there were two good queens. They protected their people well, always governing fairly, and making sure no one went hungry."

Jack remembered this tale.

"The two queens were good friends. They never argued, and they matched each other perfectly. For many years they ruled their kingdoms wonderfully, and everyone was happy."

Jack had finished his cake. He looked over to see his sister had quickly fallen asleep, her half eaten lollipop loosely clutched in her hand.

"But," the sisters told Jack, "their descendant queens were not so close. A war began in the land, a bloody one. This war has never ended. The war in Chess continues."

The sisters disappeared, leaving Jack to think. Jill always seemed to fall asleep quickly, but the parts of the story that Jack heard, the endings, were what he was supposed to learn. They were warnings.

Jack picked up his plate and the remains of his sisters lollipop. He tossed them into the well, and with his super sight watched them melt into the well, being reused for later. There was no need to be wasteful. The well sustained them.

Jack picked up his little sister and curled up with her on the grass. He rubbed the stickiness off her face with his fingers.

As was his custom, he fell asleep cradling his delicate little sister in his arms, thinking.

Little did he know, his routines would soon be ruined.

A/N: Sorry that this chapter is mostly just information. I'm just trying to introduce the characters mostly, so bare with me. There will be more plot later, promise!
