It was to Jack's great relief that the sisters finally appeared. Because in all his time living at the treacle well, he had never met anyone other than the sisters and Jill.
"Where is it that you are going?" Tillie asked the man, in her normal voice. It seemed to creep him out though. Jack realized that to him the sisters must look like little girls. Jack was sure the man didn't understand their wisdom.
"Uhm..." the man started, his composure all but destroyed at this point, "actually pretty much anywhere but back."
The three sisters grinned.
"Perfect," said Lacie.
"We're sending you to a new world. You will understand," Elsie told him.
"And now a prophecy," continued Lacie.
"A...prophecy?" the man seemed completely out of his depth, but he did not run away screaming.
Jack somehow knew what to do. He opened his hand, his sister doing the same. In their palms lay the roses they had picked, the white one wilted and browning, even after this short time, and his red one still perfect. Where the thorns had cut into their hands a golden substance bubbled up instead of blood, closing their cuts.
After all, treacle flowed in their very veins.
The man approached them warily. Jack and Jill had their hands extended towards him, letting him choose. Would he take something broken, dead, or would he choose the new, blood red rose?
He picked up the rose in Jack's hand.
"That's all you get," Tillie told him.
"Left, right, left, left, right, left," Jill told him. Jack didn't know why she had said that, but he did know that that was exactly where they had gone earlier.
He and his sister locked eyes.
"Go on," Jack told the man, gesturing behind himself into the maze.
Jack could tell the man understood nothing that had just happened. But Jack had understood it all perfectly. The man was supposed to go into the maze. The man was supposed to go to the rose wall, and from there go to a different world. Why didn't he get it?
Finally Jack just gave him a shove into the maze. The man took the first left and was gone.
The sisters gave a resigned sigh.
"I think it's time we told you a rather important story," said Elsie.
"It's a hard tale to tell," said Lacie.
"You see," continued Tillie, "we did warn them."
"It all started with a girl who was the best baker in Hearts. And everything in her world changed when she met a Rook with yellow eyes..."
A/N: Eeee! Heartless I love you! Also sorry for the short chapter. So here's my goal: while I'm on vacation I'm going to publish a chapter each time I connect to a new WiFi network. Adri will hold me to that. Anyway, I'll bet you know who the baker girl and the rook with yellow eyes are! Again, read Adri's book to see why it's important to the mystery guy (Alabaster Rayne)!
