The Wendigo is a demonic spirit rooted in Algonquin-based Native American folklore. The myth originated as a way to prevent those facing starvation in times of famine from resorting to cannibalism for survival. The Wendigo mythology later morphed into a way to encourage moderation and cooperation within tribes. Anyone guilty of greed or jealousy, or anyone who had ever tasted human flesh, was considered tainted and prey for the beast. Tribes began to appoint, and those who were believed to be transforming into a Wendigo would be put to death.
Native American tribes describe it as an evil spirit or demonic entity that was able to possess humans and in some cases, even transform into human beings themselves. The Wendigo can also mimic human voices and use them to lure their prey away from safety and to their deaths. The Wendigo would mimic the words "Help." or "Save me" to attract nearby individuals after stalking them.
The Wendigo is believed to have a slender body and unique characteristics as a small torso and long and unbalanced limbs. The Wendigo also has supernatural hunting abilities. It is unnaturally large, fast, and strong, with heightened senses ( hearing, eyesight, smell) and endurance making it immune to harsh climates.
While earlier Native American cultures spoke of the Wendigo as a spirit, eventually it took on the shape of a physical beast. This beast could also infect a person if that person was tainted by greed or had committed the sin of consuming human flesh. The creature was able to poison the minds of humans, turning them into a Wendigo and forcing them to constantly crave the meat of other humans. According to Algonquian myth, once a Wendigo eats another person, to the person it just consumed, making it impossible for it to ever be full.
Although the Wendigo originally originates from the Native American tribes, people have told many different legends about these creatures.
A lot of the Western public believed that every human being could morph into a wendigo if they were stranded in an environment with other humans and no food resources making them eat the people around for survival. It is believed that if you ate human flesh you would gain supernatural abilities or improved eyesight, speed or a better hearing and would slowly morph into a Wendigo with time. There are a lot of scenarios associated with this one but you wouldn't have to be stranded in an environment with no food resources and other individuals as you could just eat human flesh for no exact reason.
Although the Wendigo sounds like an extremely dangerous predator with no chance of escape from there are still ways to kill or get away from one.
-If you're caught in the same area as a Wendigo (really low chance you would) you should never provoke the beast by throwing rocks or yelling, shouting or shooting at it as it would only infuriate the creature more and make everything worse. The Wendigo's weakness is fire. Setting a Wendigo on fire would terminate the creature. Instead of using a gun which will not work on a Wendigo you should use a flare gun and shoot towards the Wendigo which will scare the beast away and give you an opportunity to run but not for long as it would come back and chase after you. If you're lucky and the flare hits the Wendigo the creature would die and deteriorate.
note-Wendigo's are immune to bullets or sharp objects - knives, spades, forks-
-Another way of protecting (NOT KILLING) yourself from a Wendigo is believed to be in a circle surrounded by Anasazi symbols.
Important:
Anasazi Pictograms are not fully understood as in it is one of the many primitive languages that is not fully translated. Which could mean that the Anasazi symbols don't have anything to do with Wendigos as it is just a Myth. There is no wendigo Anasazi repelling symbols I know of.
