Envy - a feeling of discontent or longing for someone else's possessions, qualities or luckEnvy is seen as a sin in Roman Catholicism because it was meant to be the reason for Cain murdering his brother, Abel. The first ever murder. It was seen this way because he envied Abel's favouritism from God.
Since then it's lead to a vast majority of the world's problems for millennia. People wanting what others have. Big and small. This could be anything from a tiny materialistic possession to coveting a person whom you have feelings for.
This is one of the worst in my opinion. It consumes you completely and drag you so low that you go insane. Lately this has been an increasing issue for me personally.
Because of where I am at the minute I don't give a fuck what happens so I'll openly say my problem is caused by the latter of the reasons I gave. (I am still a teenager so don't judge too heavily).
But forget the reasons for a minute, it has driven me to the point of insanity. I want to go outside and scream my head off, but I won't because that's seen as uncivilised.
Growing up young kids show several signs of Envy but for them I wouldn't consider it a sin because they simply might not know better. However with those who know it is considered to be. Envy is also seen to be derived from your own self-esteem. If you value yourself highly then you are less likely to feel strong Envy in the future.
The most commonly seen symbol with connotations to Envy is that of a snake. Shakespeare was the first to also associate the sin with the colour green. Although green was normally seen with nature, peace and health Shakespeare described an envious person as "Green with Envy". This was him describing the man as looking sick because of it.
There's not much else I can say about this sin but if you are having problems with your emotions and are feeling like this then talk to someone. A person that's close, a stranger or if you feel like it I'm almost always free for a talk. In my opinion this is the worst sin to have to deal with so do something about it.
