"Hey mom..." I say quickly entering the house and almost making my escape up the stairs before I'm caught.

"Kasey, come here."

I quickly walk over to my mom and open my jacket flashing the puppy tucked into my sweater.

"Kasey-"

"Before you say anything, I know we already have a dog but he was wandering alone and he's a tiny little pup I almost lost my life trying to care for out in this cold world so please..." I quickly say running out of breath.

My mom sighs and pulls him out of my jacket. "Hi there, little one." She coos.

My dog Howie runs down the steps barking and howling, I assume he could sense a new presence in our house.

"Howie! Quiet!" My mom yells and he huffs in defeat.

"What's his name...?"

"I don't know, I almost died trying to save him."

"What happened Kasey?" She asks worriedly pulling the puppy closer into her chest as he makes himself comfortable in her arms.

"Some guy was chasing him when he found me...decided to chase me too." I say opening my eyes really wide.

"Honey, how'd you get home? And did he see where you went? Are you okay?" She forces as she pulls me into a suffocating hug, causing the puppy to screech.

"Sorry lil' guy." She smiles down at him. "Some guy came out of nowhere and fought him off of me." I say taking a seat at the dining room table.

"You're lucky Kasey, this dog could've gotten you killed." She practically yells at me. "I know, I know. The guy who saved us tried to see if I was alright but I just ran." I say shaking my head.

"He couldve been cute, Kase!" She exclaims. "Mom, I wasnt really worried about the red haired clown who saved me, is that your main concern?" I insert with slight annoyance in my tone.

"No, you're right, but you do need friends, Kasey." She says picking up the phone.

"Who're you calling?" I ask. "The police Kasey, that guy, both guys, could be following you. I'm not letting this go." She says seriously with a worried look on her face.

I couldn't blame her honestly, I'd be worried as well...

I take the puppy from her and head upstairs to my room, Howie following closely behind.

Once I reach my room, i slowly close the door exhaling the whole incident out of my tired lungs.

I sit on my bed and set the puppy on my lap, Howie attempts to jump onto the bed, his fat belly slowing him down, causing him to tumble back off the edge.

I chuckle and pick him up setting him beside me as well. "I'll call you...Lucky!" I smile down at the pup and he barks in response. Howie growls at him and slowly approaches, sniffing his fur.

Lucky sits still and quiet as the old harmless dog investigates him.

Dad'll definitely hate two dogs, he already doesnt get along with Howie.

"Hey mom?" I yell through the closed door and Howie let's out an alarming howl.

No one responds and I open the door, heading downstairs.

"Mom?" I ask again.

"Shhh!" She responds quickly. "Somebody's outside! Get my good bat!" She whispers and I quickly run to the pantry to grab it.

I run back to her, Lucky in one arm, handing the bat to her with the other.

I peek out of another window to see as well and I see the figure pacing up and down my block.

Red pants, brown jacket, that's him...

"Mom..." I whisper.

"What, Kasey?" She says adjusting the bat under her left armpit.

"That's the guy who saved me." I say no longer whispering.

He was still pacing back and forth and my mom took stride to the door.

"Mom what are you doing?" I whisper yell at her.

"Asking who the fuck he is!" She says slinging the door open before I could catch her.

I watch out of the window, afraid he'll  see me and know this is where I live for sure.

"Hey you!" My mom calls after him. Sadly, I still couldn't see his face clearly.

He takes off running and my mom walks after him. Howie runs out following behind my mom as an extra warning.

He speeds up and she turns around to retreat into the house once he's out of sight.

"Mom why did you do that?" I screech.

"You know...there are some weird fuckers around here." She scoffs putting the bat back in to the pantry.

"I'm telling that man to put a camera out front once he's back." He says rolling her eyes.

"Where is dad anyway?" I ask sitting Lucky back down on the ground beside Howie, who runs away from the smaller puppy.

"I don't know. I think he's out with friends." She says waving her hand to dismiss any further questions.

"I called your uncle down at the police station Kasey, you'll be escorted  to and from school via his squad car since he patrols the area." She says throwing a bag of popcorn into the microwave.

Why is she so calm?

"Mom is it really that seri-"

"Yes Kasey, go to bed." She says sternly.

"But-"

"Kasey, go. To. Bed. Now. And take the dogs with you." She says staring me down, I go ahead and leave.

My mind was racing, full of fear, questions, and mixed emotions about the guy who saved me.

Was he a predator too?

Did he have good intentions?

I'd  never know until some answers were provided...answers I'd probably never receive...
