The first half of the day was finished, and it was now lunch hour. I walked into the huge dining hall. The large room had floor to ceiling windows lining the walls, and different size tables littered the room. There was a large café area where other students were getting lunch. I nervously looked around the room at all the kids chatting. I had no friends here, and I felt out of place. I stepped out of the doorway as others shuffled past me and I saw some students sitting alone with their laptops out, busying themselves with college work. I let out a sigh, feeling more comfortable seeing them alone. I scouted out for vacant tables, and I came across one large round table unoccupied. It was towards the back of the cafeteria, and the window gave great natural light. I selected a seat and pulled out my laptop and headphones. For ten minutes I was left unbothered, and it was nice to be able to write in peace.
"Hello! What's good?" A body slid in the chair next to me. I looked at the kid, taking out one of my earbuds.
"Uh, hi?" I came across as more rude than I meant to. I just wasn't sure who this kid was, and I didn't know why he was talking to me.
"I'm Charles Lee." He flashed a beautiful smile. His eyes were bright, and his hair fell perfectly to one side of his face, while the other side was cleanly shaved. He was very handsome. "You are...?" He paused, leaning his elbows onto the table and holding his chin in the palms of his hands.
"Alexander," I paused. "Uh, Hamilton." I closed my laptop slightly as his eyes widened.
"Ah! Yes! I knew James Hamilton's son was coming here! But I didn't know it was you." His inflection on 'you' made me nervous. It didn't sound inviting, but rather manipulative and cold.
"Haha, yea..." I said, the uncomfortableness leaking through my words.
"Oh yea, you're Laurens' room-mate yea?"
"Laurens?" I asked puzzled.
"John Laurens. Curly hair, freckles, tall, a bitch." I couldn't help but smile. Someone else agreed that he was a bitch.
"Sadly, I am." I looked away from Charles, and my eyes caught three gorgeous girls walking past. The one in the middle especially caught my eye. She was tall, slim, dark skinned, and just... a goddess. She was wearing a green sundress and she smiled at me as I was practically gawking at her.
"Earth to Alexander." Charles waved his hand in front of my face and I snapped back to reality.
"Sorry, what?" I practically had been drooling over her. Charles smirked.
"Ah, you've got eyes for them, huh?" He gestured to the table the three girls had sat at. "Which one? Or all of them?" He laughed lightly and I felt my cheeks going red in embarrassment. "Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy. The Schuyler sisters. Angelica's fourth year, Eliza's third, and Peggy's first. You're a freshman so Peggy's right up your alley." Charles lightly punched my shoulder, and I rubbed it instinctively, though it didn't hurt.
"Oh, cool..." I said in fake interest. I wasn't sure how I felt about this kid.
An array of other students began swarming the table sitting with lunch trays and all talking at the same time. I looked around and there were more kids than the table could fit. Charles Lee joined the loud conversation and I looked lost.
"Lee, who's the new kid?" A new voice said.
"Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton." Charles said with a smile. I got an uneasy look from Aaron Burr, but I met his eyes with a smile. The rest of the lunch was spent with the group of students practically screaming, as I just sat there uncomfortably.
The dorm room door flew open and John pranced in. "You seem chipper." I said, looking up from the book I was indulged in. He just shrugged and went to take care of Anthony.
"So, you're friends with Charles Lee?" John said blandly.
"Well, not really friends more-" John cut me off.
"He's not a good guy. He fucks everyone over and he's a little cunt."
"Excuse me what?" My tone held offense. Not that I wanted to defend Charles Lee, but I hated having John bash anything I was apart of. John just continued.
"But I mean, it makes sense you're associating with him. You two would probably get along really well. I mean you're both assholes, manipulative, rich-"
I wasn't going to let him finish. "Okay, John you know what? Shut up. I'm sorry I have more money than you, I'm sorry that my father actually has a stable life style and yours apparently doesn't, I'm sorry you're soooo bothered by my own personal life." I snapped at him, and I saw his usually big stature shrink. I felt a little bad as his face got red and he seemed embarrassed. "Just," I sighed. "You don't have to be my friend, you don't have to like me, you don't even have to spare me a glance, but please just treat me like a human being. That would be enough."
