When I was eight years old, I heard my momma singing a song I've never heard before.

I saw the light, I saw the light,

No more darkness, no more  night

Now I'm so happy  no sorrow in sight

Praise the Lord I saw the light.

her voice was soft and gentle, the lyrics were speaking to me, I wanted to sing along with her.

"What are you singing, momma?" I asked her in awe, I was so amazed by her voice.

She turned from the kitchen sink to face me with a big 'ol smile on her face, her baby bump round and big, it looked like she was so proud of me for asking such a simple question.

"Well," Momma walked up to me and knelt down with her hands on my shoulders. "When I was around your age your grandfather was playing one of his silly records, if anything I was annoyed by it but there was something about that record that made me fall in love with the sounds of Hank Williams."

Momma began singing again this time a little louder, she took me by the hand and danced with me in the kitchen. she was singing a different tune, a little more upbeat. It filled my heart with gladness, it was the first time i fell in love with music.

When I was twelve Momma and Daddy bought me my first acoustic guitar, I was so happy.

Daddy and I sat on our porch steps on a warm Alabama day with Momma sitting on the swing and Lila behind us, Daddy was showing me the chords to Hank Williams'  Ramblin' Man, simple and easy.

"Okay so put your fingers on the neck of the guitar.."

"Like this, Daddy?"

"Yup, now strum with your other hand."

I did as he instructed but only to create a disastrous sound, momma laughed  and daddy just smiled.

"That wasn't good, Joanne." Lila said covering her ears.
