CHAPTER THREE
ALL THE SAME
A week had passed since the incident with Nancy. Thankfully, the bruises that once adorned Birdies face had faded, though there were still remnants of it. Despite her reputation, she didn't enjoy the way the bruises made her look - she hated being stared down like she was some sort of criminal.Birdie sat quietly amongst her the usual group; Mick, Joselyn and a few others who were chatting amongst themselves. The girl had been dragging her fork against her plate for the entirety of lunch, silently contemplating to herself about the events of the past week.
A burning sensation rushed down her spine, almost signalling that a pair of familiar eyes were burning holes into her back. From the corner of her eye, she spots Billy - lounging on a bench with his favourite toy, Kathy Saunders. His eyes swiftly connected with Birdie's as he slung his arm around the back of Kathy's shoulders, clutching onto the blonde tightly. The girl rolled her eyes in disgust, turning away from the pair and picking back up her fork to scrape her plate some more.
She shifts in her seat, glancing down at the empty carton in front of her. "I'm going to go grab another drink, you need anything?" She announces to the group, picking herself up off the chair.
"I'll have another muffin if there's any left." Mick adds quickly, almost jumping from the bench.
The girls chuckle at him in unison before Birdie drags herself away from the crowd and toward the snack bar. She attempts to rid herself of the anxiety building within her chest as she passes by Billy's table in order to reach the drinks fridge, but it's useless - especially because as soon as she enters their vision she is instantly baited.
"Looking good as always Mitchell." Tommy teases, pouting as she strides by.
Her eyes roll to the back of her head as she continues to shove down her irritation, blanking the group out as much as she can.
"You giving me the silent treatment now? Thought we'd moved past this Birdie." Tommy huffs jokingly, though the humour seemed to dissolve on his tongue.
"You know Tommy, if you tried to run half as much as your mouth does maybe you wouldn't have to resort to snorting daddy's stash behind the bleachers every morning." She smiles sarcastically, the facade instantly fading once the words left her mouth.
He stutters before laughing once again, "You are just hilarious, aren't you little bird." He sucks his teeth menacingly, "Since we're on the topic of snorting..."
Her heart practically halts, his words wrapping around it like a noose. She stops dead in her tracks and snaps her head in his direction, staring him dead in the eye.
"Excuse me?" Her mouth practically hangs open in shock, Her pulse thudding within her neck.
"You heard me." He chuckles lowly, "You want to talk about mommies and daddies - let's talk yours."
