[chapter 12]
Their first stop is Pops.
If Jughead thinks it's weird that this important mission of theirs starts at the diner, he doesn't mention it.
He doesn't even complain about carrying the food. Not that it's heavy or that it's out of character for him to want food. It's just weird that he's going along with it. Especially when it's Veronica giving the orders.
Their second stop, a locksmiths, goes equally as smoothly. It's easy to convince the guy that she's not at school because she's been locked out of her house. Especially because he truly doesn't give a damn. She makes sure to have Jughead wait outside for this one.
It's not until their halfway to their final destination that he starts to notice that something might be up.
"Veronica."
She stops walking. "Hmm?"
"Not that I don't trust you, but do you mind telling me what important business you have in the middle of the woods."
"Oh come on, we're still at the edge of town. You're making it sound like I'm luring you to the middle of no where."
"You're the one who said 'luring', not me."
She sighs. "We're nearly there, just trust me. Ok?"
Coming up with something she could do to give Jughead an afternoon off from being his usual brooding self, had been harder than she'd like to admit.
It's easy for her. She's the sort of person who'd do anything once. Jughead, though, is more difficult. Flashy wouldn't mean anything to him. She might as well be throwing him a birthday party he never asked for.
In the end, she'd gone with a mix of things that he might like. Food, quiet, and a setting fit for some creepy 70s thriller.
The weather helps. Autumn has started to bleed into winter, leaving fallen leaves and the sort of weather perfect for a hike.
They come off of the dirt track they'd been walking on and out into a clearing.
It's a small plot of land on one of the highest points of a hill that overlooked Riverdale. At the edge of the clearing is a small stone cabin. Opposite, right at the edge, is a drop. The perfect place to dangle your legs over and watch the world go by.
"When my mom and I first moved to Riverdale, she kept talking about really getting settled. It was never the plan to live in a hotel." Veronica shrugs. "She bought this land with the intention of building a house. Something big and grand that'd make the Blossom's jealous."
